    CHESAPEAKE - Ruth Jackson Parker, 75, died Nov. 13, 2008, in a local hospital. She was born in Bluefield, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late Joseph and ODell Jackson. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde H. Parker.
   Ruth is survived by a daughter, Nancy B. Freeman and husband L.G.; a son,
Stan Blankenship, all of Chesapeake; two sisters, Nancy Farrell of Princeton, W.Va., and Beth Hicks and husband Danny of Bluewell, W.Va.; two brothers, David Jackson of Matoaka, W.Va., and Steven Jackson of Chesapeake; two grandchildren, Stacey F. Vogl and Justin S. Freeman, both of Chesapeake; and two great-grandchildren, Dylan S. Vogl and Madison R. Freeman. She was predeceased by a son, Charles G. Blankenship.
    A cryptside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum by the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood. There will be no viewing or visitation in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel.

Blankenship, Phyllis Jacqueline Mizelle

Phyllis Jacqueline Mizelle, 65, of the 1400 block of Hazel Ave., went to be with the Lord Aug. 11, 2008, in Chesapeake. A native of Giles County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Charles G. and Polly Perry Blankenship. She worked as a nurse for many years at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C., and had recently been attending Chesapeake Vineyard Christian Fellowship.

                She is survived by two sisters, Charlotte Jones and Pat Bell and her husband Robert, all of Chesapeake; a brother, Carlos Gene Blankenship and his wife Gay of Greenup, Ky.; three aunts, two uncles, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A funeral will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. in Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, with Pastor Elston Brown officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Mount Carmel Christian Church Cemetery, 27882 Walters Highway, Carrsville, Va.

Iris N. Light, 39, of the 4800 block of Texas Ave., passed away Oct. 31, 2008. Born in Puerto Rico, Iris is survived by her husband, Steven M. Light; parents, Idio and Carmen Rivera of Orlando, Fla.; children, Branden and Jessika Light; and two brothers, Rafael E. Rivera and Ricardo Rivera of Orlando. A funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Norfolk Apostolic Church with Pastor Michael G. Blankenship officiating. The family will receive friends at the church two hours prior to the funeral. Burial will be in Quantico National Cemetery at 10 a.m. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Myrianthe (Mary) Pavlides, 102, went to join her beloved husband Christ, in heaven Aug. 28, 2008. Born July 18, 1906, in Nicosia, Cyprus, she was the last survivor of 12 siblings. She came to the U.S. in 1930 and five years later married Christ. They were married for more than 60 years before his death in 1995. She was a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Norfolk and the Golden Years Club. She was also a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Virginia Beach.

Mary leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion for her family. Her beautiful smile and her famous stuffed grape leaves will be forever remembered.

She is survived by her daughter, Florence Blankenship of Virginia Beach, who did more to make her comfortable and content than anyone can imagine; her daughter, Irene Wood and son-in-law Bob; granddaughters, Marian Mace (Bob) and Christine Comus (Louis); and seven great-grandchildren, all from Arizona. She is also survived by a special niece, Helen Kanakis, and numerous other nieces and nephews overseas.

Our gratitude to Dr. Nabil Tadros for his many years of love and care. A special thanks to her caregivers of many years, Laverne Wheeling, Rosie Patterson, Chris Hall, Vernell Curry and Joann Clough and to her caring neighbors and many friends.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 621 First Colonial Road, Virginia Beach, by Father James Pavlow. A Trisagion service will be held Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Bayside Chapel of Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, where the family will remain to receive friends until 8 p.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk after a reception at the church. May her smile, love and memory be eternal.

Wanda Jean Blankenship Baker, 41 years of age, passed away Sunday, July 11, 2004, in the Buchanan General Hospital. Born in Buchanan County, Jan. 11, 1963, she was the daughter of Betty Jane (Edna) Blankenship and the late Leonard Blankenship. She was of the Christian faith, 1981 graduate of Hurley High School, a certified pharmacy technician, former employee of J.C. Penny’s and currently employed by Buchanan County Rural Family Practice.

In additional to her father, she was preceded in death by one sister, Tammy Denise Blankenship; and one uncle, Cecil Blankenship.

She is survived by her mother, Betty Jane (Edna) Blankenship of Hurley, Va.; her husband of 16 years, Donald (Dude) Baker of Grundy; three sisters, Patsy Scott of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Linda Powers of Wytheville and Judy Newberry of Vansant, Va.; and three brothers, Auldia Blankenship of Hurley, Austin Blankenship of Wolford, Va., and Terry Blankenship of Hurley. She was also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Wanda Jean Blankenship Baker will be conducted Thursday, July 15, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Mary Lou Old Regular Baptist Church, State Line Ridge 1, Paynesville, W.Va., with Elder Roscoe Crouse and Elder Junior Lester officiating. Burial will follow in the Mary Lou Cemetery on State Line Ridge, Paynesville.

Family and friends will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be: Dr. Jackie Briggs and employees of Buchanan County Rural Family Practice.

                HURLEY – Goldie Ann Blankenship Baker, 78 years of age, passed away Friday, March 17, 2006, at her home. Born in Buchanan County, Va., June 12, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Conley Blankenship and Pearl Charles Blankenship. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, faithful member of the Sulphur Springs Old Regular Baptist Church, avid gardener and enjoyed working with her flowers. Goldie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
                In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Baker; one son, Hillard Baker; one grandson, Scottie Dean Baker; three sisters,
Laura Blankenship, Hazel Cooper and Helen Smith; five brothers, Clell, Edgar, Roy, Morgan and Willard Blankenship.
                She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Edgar Baker of Hurley; four daughters, Sandra Fields, Patsy Bailey and Dianne Vance, all of Hurley, and Judy Meadows of Phelps, Ky.; six sons, Jimmy Baker, Roger Baker, Steve Baker, Randy Baker and Mark Baker, all of Hurley, and Edgar Baker Jr. of Grundy; three sisters, Vicey King of Wolford, Georgia Stiltner of Grundy and Cora Looney of Rice; 19 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

OAKWOOD, Va. — Norma Jean Blankenship, 55, of Oakwood, passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007. Born March 4, 1952, she was the daughter of Eugene Hughes and the late Nora Ellen Cook Hughes. Norma worked as a custodian for several years at Eagle Hawk Carbon and Dr. J.P. Sutherland Jr. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jimmy Dean Hughes.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Cecil Wilson Blankenship of the home; her daughter, Melinda Sue Blankenship Martin and her husband Eric Alan of Strange Creek; two grandchildren, Tiffany Erica and Derek Alan Martin; her father, Eugene Hughes of Whitewood, Va.; four brothers, Jerry Wayne Hughes and his wife Dale of Pilgrims Knob, Va., David Lee Hughes of Richlands, Va., Michael Darrell Hughes and his wife Lisa of Whitewood, Abraham Hughes, also of Richlands; three sisters, Brenda Kay Harrison and her husband Larry of Lebanon, Va., Lillian Sue Yates of South Carolina, Angel Keen and her husband Terry of Jewell Ridge, Va.; a special friend and sister, Brenda Blankenship of Oakwood; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Blankenship, 60, of the Knox Creek area of Grundy, passed away Monday, April 4, 2005.Born in Buchanan County, Va., he was a son of the late Nicodemis and Virginia Lester Blankenship and was of the Baptist faith. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of the North American Hunting Club, National Rifle Association, loved hunting and fishing. He was a disabled coal miner.

                Rosa Bell Blankenship, 70, of Grundy, VA, died at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy, VA Saturday, June 23, 2007, following a long illness. Rosa was born March 2, 1937 at Jolo, WV, a Daughter of the late Tom and Mazy Rife Thornsbury. She was affiliated with the Church of Christ, Formerly owned and operated the Blankenship Grocery Store in Jolo, and was a past president of the Bradshaw Lions Club.

                In Addition to her parents, Her Husband, Doyal Blankenship; great grandson Steven Tyler Blankenship; three brothers, Ezra, Clyde and Homer Thornsbury, and two sisters, Ella Sandahl and Sarah Jane Stacy preceded her in death.

Arthur Lee "Mousie" Blankenship, 86, went to be with the Lord Nov. 8.He made his home in the Rowe area of Buchanan County. In recent years he and his beloved wife lived at Mountain View Adult Care Assisted Living Facility in Lebanon.Born Sept. 19, 1920 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Rev. David and Nora Bailey Blankenship. He was a member of UMWA and was a retired coal tipple operator. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Orvil and Patton Blankenship, and two sisters, Faye Street and Lucy Belcher.

Survivors: beloved and devoted wife of 58 years, Fannie Ellen Blankenship; son, Larry David Blankenship and wife, Claudine, of Tazewell; brothers, David Junior Blankenship and wife, Barbara, of Oakwood, James Harlan Blankenship and wife, Doris, of Cedar Bluff, Billy L. Blankenship and wife, Jean, of Norton; sisters, Pastor Trula Harman and husband, Clyde, and Ruby Cox and husband, Emory, all of Oakwood, Dorothy Harman and husband, Kendris, of Tazewell; grandchildren, Dia Blankenship of Bluefield, VA, David Blankenship and wife, Natalie, of Tazewell; and great grandchildren, Madeline Blankenship and Larry David Blankenship III.

Darlene Blankenship, 42, of Rowe, died Nov. 7 in a Grundy hospital. Born Nov. 28, 1963 in Manassas, she was a daughter of Thelma Lockhart Blankenship of Rowe and the late Willard Blankenship. She had spent her early life in Manassas prior to moving to Buchanan County. She was an employee of Data Services of America in Vansant.

Additional survivors: brothers, James Blankenship of Rowe, David Blankenship of Manassas; special friend, Carl Adkins of Swords Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Nov. 11 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ancil Childress officiating.Interment followed in the Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.

A native of Pitt County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence M. and Lona Cleo Cannon Marslender and the wife of the late George King Blankenship. She was a member of Great Bridge Church of Christ.

Paulette Blankenship Smith of Chesapeake; two sons, Kenneth E. Blankenship and his wife, Donna of Williamsburg, Va., and Geoffrey King Blankenship and his wife Barb of Cincinnati; one sister, Louise Cupitt of Chesapeake; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Bruce R. Smith.

    CHESAPEAKE - Franklin G. Ausmus Sr., 79, went to be with the Lord Jan. 24, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
    He joined the Marine Corps in 1945 at the age of 17 and retired at the rank of gunnery sergeant after 21 years. He served with the 1st Marine Division during the Korean War and survived the battle at the Chosin Reservoir. After retirement from military service, he worked in electronics for many years and later worked for Sears in the paint and hardware department, a job he truly loved. Frank had a love for people and was well-liked by many. He was a member of Grace Bible Church in Chesapeake. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen in June 2007.
    He is survived by three sons, Franklin G. Ausmus Jr. and wife Margaret of Chesapeake, Lionel C. Cabaniss and wife Mary of Beaufort, S.C., and William C. Cabaniss and wife Carolyn of Wilmington, N.C.; four sisters,
Marilyn Blankenship of Yellowstone, Wyo., Mary Little of Anderson, Calif., Gail Schultze of Roseburg, Ore., and Paige Howard of Riddle, Ore.; a brother, Merle Blankenship of Penrose, Colo.; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
    A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements.
    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace Bible Church Building Fund. The family would like to offer a special thanks to Bon Secours Hospice nurses, Paulette Parker and Kim Foreman for their care and kindness, Felicia the “scrub lady,” Talmadge Hassell and her daughter Nancy Sitar for their love, kindness and apple pies, and to Frank’s sister, Gail, who traveled across the country and made it possible for him to spend his final days at home and for her love, care and self sacrifice we are deeply grateful.

NARROWS, Va. — Freddie Lee “Paw” Blankenship, 73, of Narrows, passed away Friday, Oct. 6, 2006 at the Princeton Community Hospital.He was born in Rocky Gap, Va., the son of the late Ernest and Letha Nelson Blankenship. He was a former Chief of the Rocky Gap Fire Department, and was the head of the Blue Grass Express Band.

Mr. Blankenship is survived by his wife, Winnie “Maw” Blankenship of the home; A daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Michael “Mickey” Holt of Narrows; a son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Jeannie Blankenship of Rocky Gap; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Edith Blankenship of Bastian, Va.; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and a host of family, friends and neighbors also survive.

A graveside service will be held Monday, Oct. 9, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Dodson-Clark Cemetery in the Round Bottom community, Va., with the Rev. Phillip Nelson officiating.

RICHMOND - Horace J. Traylor, formerly of Virginia Beach, died March 16, 2007, at Henrico
Doctors’ Hospital after a brief illness. He is survived by a daughter,
Betty Lou Blankenship and husband Charles E. Blankenship Jr.; son, Thomas H. Traylor and his wife Bess W. Traylor, all of Richmond; six grandchildren, David DuVal and his wife Cari, Suzanne Copley and her husband John, Kim Kelley and her husband Randy, Keith Blankenship and his wife Debbie, Leslie Traylor and Bryan Traylor; and great-grandchildren, Nicole and Mollie Blankenship, and Lillian and Traylor DuVal.

While in Richmond, Mr. Traylor was active in Mount Vernon Baptist Church as a deacon with a close association with the Rev. Cecil Anderson. He was a retired employee of Philip Morris and received national recognition as “Worker Father of the Year” in 1951, joining such notables as Estes Kefauver, Eddie Cantor, James Steward, Robert Alda and Phil Rizzuto, receiving this honor. Having lived in Richmond for more than 60 years, he retired to Virginia Beach and later married Betty Williams, now deceased. Volunteering with food deliveries to homeless shelters and playing golf occupied his time there. Thirty years later, he returned to Richmond to live at Imperial Plaza Retirement Community. He leaves behind many friends at Imperial Plaza, especially Dottie Garretson.
    The family will receive friends today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the West Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St., also where a funeral will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. Interment in Westhampton Memorial Park.

Alda B. Blankenship, 94, formerly of Ringgold, Georgia died on April 18, 2007 in Virginia. She was born in Flat Rock, Alabama on March 6, 1913. Prior to moving to Virginia to be near her daughter, she lived most of her life in and around the Chattanooga, Tennessee and Ringgold, Georgia area. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Charles Lee Blankenship. She was a member of Ringgold First Baptist Church and Deborah Sunday School Class, which she helped organize in 1962 and taught for 11 years. She was also a member of the PTA for most of her adult life and also a life member and past president of the Catoosa County Council of PTA. At the age of 62, she started art lessons and enjoyed oil paintings until the age of 87. She was a member of the Civic Art League and Regional Art Alliance of Chattanooga. Her husband, Charles, daughter, Betty Shelby, son, Charles (Tommy) Blankenship; grandson, Barry Shelby; brothers, Clark Byers and Alva Byers; and sisters, Dolly Smith and Isabel Fox preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Wilson Leggett of Cape Charles, Virginia and brother, Robert “Kay” Wilson of Chattanooga, Tennessee, son-in-law, Jack Shelby of LaFayette, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Bobbye Blankenship of Ringgold, Georgia. She is also survived by seven granddaughters,Teresa (Shelby) Johnston, Lori Shelby, Lisa (Blankenship) Prutsman, Sara (Blankenship) Gilliam, Gina (Blankenship) Duva, Renee Gattis, Michelle (Gattis) Lovatt and 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and three special friends, Katie and Darby Moraitakis and Anne Smitherman who she fondly referred to as her “adopted” granddaughters. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Wilson Funeral Home Wallis-Stewart Chapel in Ringgold, Georgia with Rev. Bruce Sloan officiating.. Interment will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday April 28, 2007 from 11:00 A.M. until funeral time at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be given to the Ringgold First Baptist Library Fund, 7611 Nashville St. Ringgold, Georgia 30736 or Heritage Hall Activity Fund Department, P.O. Blankenship, Lula Belle Dau of

Roby Greene Janney, 87, of Luray, died Sunday, April 29, 2007, at MontVue Nursing Home in Luray. Mr. Janney was born April 11, 1920, in Bluff City, and was a son of the late Millard Oscar Janney and Lula Belle Blankenship Janney. He attended public school in Pearisburg and attended the University of Virginia. He served in the 4th Marine Division, U.S. Marine Corp. in World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater at Saipan Tinian and Iwo Jima as a military police company commander. He retired from the Marines as a Captain. He graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1948 and began practicing in Luray in 1948 as sole practitioner. He formed Will & Janney with J. Everett Will in 1953.  He was commissioner in Chancery for more than 30 years in the Circuit Court of Page County. He was a substitute judge in the 26th Judicial District Courts for more than 20 years, commissioner of Accounts for Page County beginning on retirement of Judge Mark Woodward. He was a member of the Virginia State Bar Council, life member of American Bar Association and the Virginia Bar Association. He was president of Page County Bar Association, a member of the Virginia State Bar 7th District Disciplinary Committee. He was engaged in a general practice of law from 1948 until October 2006, when he retired from active practice.  He was a longtime chairman of Page County Unit of the American Cancer Society, a founding member and president of Page Valley Kiwanis Club, former commander and chaplain of Luray American Legion Post No. 22 and chairman of Page County Democratic Committee. He was an active member of Main Street Baptist Southern Church in Luray. On June 6, 1943, he married Marion Louise Coward, who survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Robert S. Janney and Rodger C. Janney, both of Luray; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Dr. Charles Jolley conducted a graveside service 10 a.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Luray.

              Martha Blankenship Whitmore, 90, died Sept. 16, 2006. She was a native of Ettrick and a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Virginia Cardwell Blankenship. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Sterling Whitmore and son-in-law, John Allen Myers Sr.
                She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Whitmore Myers of Virginia Beach; two grandsons, John A. Myers Jr. and wife Lindy of West Virginia and Bruce G. GREENVILLE — Carl Blankenship, 80, of Greenville, formerly of Hanover, passed away November 28, 2007 at the home of his daughter, Melissa Sarver in Dublin, Va. Born October 2, 1927 in Cub Creek, he was a son of the late Bill and May Harless Blankenship. Carl was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army. He was a retired coal miner having worked for 35 years in McDowell, Wyoming and Mingo Counties. He spent his retirement years enjoying hunting with long time friend Ott Trent and flea marketing with neighbor and close friend Pat Wickline. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Evelyn; brothers, Alfred, James and twin brother Ray Blankenship; and his son-in-law, Mick Sarver.

Survivors include his daughter, Melissa Sarver of Dublin, Va.; step grandson, Chase Sarver of Dublin, Va.; sisters, Irena Lilly and husband Alvie, Cora Perry and husband Lyle; brother, Arthur Blankenship and wife Nancy all of Statesville, N.C.; nieces, who lived with him and Evelyn, Pamela Steele of Iaeger and Linda Gail Kuesterbeck of Cleveland, Ohio; and many other family and friends. Harry H. Blankenship, 73, of Cedar Bluff, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2005 in a Big Stone Gap health care facility following a long illness. Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Otto and Nova Nipper Blankenship. He was a U.S. Army Korean veteran, a plant foreman of General Motors in Cincinnati, Ohio and owner of a body shop in Richlands for several years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Vivian Rogers. Mr. Blankenship is survived by one brother, Glen Blankenship of Cedar Bluff, and one niece, Linda Ponsiglione of San Diego, Calif. Several cousins also survive. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 28, 2005 at the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va. with the Rev. Allen Jessee officiating.

Auldia Leonard Blankenship, 60, of Hurley, died Monday, October 20, 2008 at a Richlands hospital. Born March 5, 1948, he was the son of Betty Jane (Edna) Blankenship of Hurley and the late Leonard Blankenship. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, was a disabled mine foreman and EMT, a member of the Knox Creek Hunting Club, a 1967 graduate of Hurley High School and was of the Christian faith.
                In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two sisters,
Wanda Baker and Tammy Blankenship; foster uncle, Cecil Blankenship; paternal grandparents, King and Rebecca Blankenship; and
maternal grandparents, Clark and
Allie Blankenship. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, Timothy E. Blankenship and wife, Gloria, of Summersville, SC and Auldia Anthony Blankenship of Sugar Island, MI; two grandsons, Justin and Rhett Blankenship; two brothers, Austin Blankenship and wife, Margaret, of Wolford and Terry Blankenship and wife, Athelene, of Hurley; three sisters, Judy B. Newberry and husband, Randy, of Vansant, Patricia (Patsy) Scott and husband, Bert, of Murfreesboro, TN and Linda B.
