+2011, Greeneville, Greene Co., TN, Obituary

The Greeneville Sun, (TN) - June 17, 2011

Mary Ellen Blankenship, 88, of Radford Drive, Greeneville, died Wednesday June 15, 2011, at her home with her family by her side. Mary Ellen was a sister, wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, and seamstress, who gave all she had to each role she carried in this life.

She provided a warm and loving home for her family and ensured there was never a shortage of love, smiles and hugs for all her "babies." She loved God, her family and friends, spreading immeasurable joy to all who had the pleasure of being near her. She spent most of her life in the Camp Creek community and resided at Plaza Towers for the 10 years prior to her stroke in April 2010. While living at the Towers, she made many very special friends. She was a member of Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and dearly loved her pastor and church family. Despite her illness, she continued to be content with her new circumstances. She always wore a beautiful smile and even though she couldn't speak, she became good at communicating with those around her with amazing patience. Her children and grandchildren knew they were a treasure to her and she would never get enough of just being with them. Even in the darkest hours, the radiance of her smile warmed their hearts. That light will shine continually through the generations, although not nearly so brightly without her leading the way. Her passing has saddened us all, but we will meet again in the great reunion with our Lord, family, and friends who have gone before.

Survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law: Joan and Kyle Harris and Gayle and Fay Lynn Ricker, all of Greeneville, Karen Loeser of Sarasota, Fla., and Elizabeth and Bob Johnson of Hendersonville, N.C.; nine grandchildren: Jeff Harris of Chuckey, Melody Ricker, Cristal Harris, and Bethany Ricker, all of Greeneville, Jennifer Blalock of South Carolina, Jesse Willis, Joseph Loeser, and Sarah Loeser, all of Sarasota, and Bryson Ricker of Limestone; 11 great-grandchildren: Jeffrey Harris, Jordan Harris, Allison Harris, Hannah Craig, Jackie Dean, Kayla Ricker, Julius Gross, Emily Sheppard, Austin Sheppard, Mariah Scruggs, and Grant Ricker; one great-great-granddaughter: Addison Norton; one brother and sister-in-law: Harold and Wilma Ricker; one sister: Lois Jean Metcalf; a brother-in-law: Claude Griffin; sisters-in-law: Wanda Mullins of Morristown, Ruth Ricker and Lois Ricker of Greeneville, and Pat Ricker.

She was a daughter of the late Cyrus and Nellie Tarlton Ricker and was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years: Garfield Blankenship; one son: Charles Blankenship; a granddaughter: Patti Craig; five brothers: Oliver Dean Ricker, Wallace Ricker, Wilmer Ricker, Raymond Ricker, and Lyndon Ricker; and a brother-in-law: Roy Metcalf.

2011, Knoxville, Knox Co., TN, Obituary

Knoxville News Sentinel (TN) - July 27, 2011

Lane, Rachel Christine Lundgren age 104, formerly of Maryville, TN and Chattanooga, TN, passed into the arms of the Lord on Monday, July 25, 2011 at Manorhouse Assisted Living in Knoxville, TN. She'll always be known to all her "children" as the best Granny ever. "Granny" was born on May 30, 1907 in Westville, PA. She married her soul mate, Emert, and together they had three children.

She served as President of Maryville HSPTA and Blount County WCTU. She also served as President of The Maryville Garden Club and organized The Smokey Mountain Club in her own living room. She taught Sunday School and served as Circle Chairman at many churches through the years. Because she always had a way with words, it seems fitting to quote her own words when describing the story of her century of life: "I had the honor of being accepted at 'Henry Ford School of Nursing'. The reason I became a nurse is because of my grand-dad's illness and our family doctor calling me his 'special nurse' during the Flu Epidemic of 1914. I loved every day of nursing- my training helped in caring for my best patients: my own children. I stayed active in volunteer work, but put our home interests first. The home was and is God's first institution. We used the Lord's Prayer each day and the 23rd Psalm went with us as we traveled. Our special days were shared with our children. Precious memories- how they fill my heart with joy." As good as she was with words, she never used them to brag about herself, so I guess I'll just have to do it for her: she rode a jet-ski on her 101s t birthday, proudly wore high heels 'til she was 98, and her weekly dance partner in the early 1900's was none other than Henry Ford. But what we'll remember most about her are her words of wisdom: "make your own happiness", "be kind to others", and "keep busy".

Christine was preceded in death by her husband, J. Emert Lane; and her daughter, Marie Lane Earl. She is survived by her brother, Carl Lundgren and his wife, Alice, of Michigan; son, John Emert Lane and his wife, Barbara, of Chattanooga, TN; daughter, Alice Lane Blankenship of Destin, FL; 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; many beloved nieces and nephews; and the loving Manorhouse staff members, who she would certainly include in this list of her "children".

Family and friends will meet at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Grandview Mausoleum for an entombment service with Rev. Cheryl Caruso officiating.

2012, Lafayette, Macon Co., TN, Obituary

Macon County Times (Lafayette, TN) - March 8, 2012

Ms. Bonnie White, age 80, of Lafayette, passed away on Wednesday evening, Feb. 29, 2012 at Knollwood Manor in Lafayette. Funeral services for Ms. Bonnie White were conducted Sat., March 3, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Alexander Funeral Home with Brother Jerry Gammons officiating. Ely Malo, Kenan White, and David White served as Honorary Pallbearers. Mikie White, Greg White, Wesley White, Tyler Blankenship, Stetson White, Kyle Johnson, Jordan Andrews, and Ben Key served as Active Pallbearers. Interment followed in the Macon County Memorial Gardens.

Bonnie was born in Macon County to James Freely Caruthers and Judy Flora King Caruthers on Nov. 12, 1931. She was one of three daughters born to this union. Bonnie was married to her childhood sweetheart James Billy White on Jan. 15, 1951, making a home and sharing their lives together. Billy passed away on Jan. 21, 1994.

Besides her husband and parents; sister, Georgie Caruthers, sister-in-law, Lois Doss, and mother-in-law, Gertie Law also preceded her in death. Bonnie had four sons, and two daughters that her life revolved around. Mama, Bunny, Me Ma, and Mimi, no matter her name, it's all the same. She was one of a kind. No matter if it was taking a load of children to school, taking someone to their appointment or to get their groceries, Bonnie enjoyed it. She loved to drive her bus. When Bonnie did not trust herself to drive the bus any longer, she chose to deliver meals to the people who were in need. Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency was where Bonnie worked for close to thirty years, before retiring. Then after work it was off to Rivergate, if someone needed her to go. She loved going to ballgames, playing bingo, and going for a ride with whoever came by. Mama spent many happy times watching her children ride horses, play sports and just working with them on the farm. Then the grandchildren and great grandchildren came and it was time to watch them play games. Whether playing ball, performing at school, truck-pulling or anything else, Bonnie was always there. Bonnie also liked watching Pat Summit and the Lady VOLS play Basketball. She was saved and joined the Lafayette Missionary Baptist Church where she remained a member. We are going to miss you because you were always there. Go rest high on that mountain, Mama, Bunny, Me Ma, and Mimi. You deserve it.

Bonnie is survived by; sons, James (Cathy) White, Terry (Rhonda) White, Jerry (Arlene) White, and Gary "Pookey" (Tanisha) White, Daughters, Laura (Kenny) Driver, and Judy (Mark) Blankenship, sister, Dorothy (Bill) Meador all of Lafayette, sister-in-law, Jean (Benny) Law of Adolphus, Ky., 12 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Williamson

2010, Brentwood, Williamson Co., TN, Obituary

The Tennessean , January 8, 2010

Blankenship, H. Fred Age 96. January 7, 2010. Retired Minister and District Superintendent, Tennessee Conference of The United Methodist Church. Born July 25, 1913 in Hardin County near Sardis, TN, Happy Fred was the tenth of fifteen children born to the late Joseph Butler and Ardelia Orr Blankenship. Raised in the little Lebanon community, Reverend Blankenship and his brothers worked the land with their father while the girls helped their mother with chores and the younger children. As was the custom in the rural South during the Depression, he was expected to drop out of school after the eighth grade. However, his father allowed him to go to high school - as long as education did not get in the way of farming - and young Fred graduated from Saltillo High School, class of 1932, of which he was president. His senior year, he was a member of the Saltillo championship basketball team that went on to the state tournament in Knoxville, and he placed first in the district in the mile run.

The Sunday after his high school graduation, he preached his first sermon, at the Lebanon Methodist Church, in the Central Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. On Christmas Day of that year, he performed his first wedding, for which he was paid a dollar. At that time, there were thirty preachers in that little conference, which went from the Mississippi River at Memphis all the way to Chattanooga; three of those preachers were Blankenship brothers, Frank, Fred and Floyd.

His first charge was the Savannah Circuit (Eureka, Robertson's Chapel, Wesley's Chapel and Oak Grove with two additional "part-time" churches, Greenwood and Highland). This charge paid a salary of $400.00, but in 1932-33, he received $75.00, "not all of it in cash." In his first year, he had no car, so he often ran between churches (in 1933, he traded a Bible for a car!). Ordained a deacon in 1934, in 1936 he was ordained an elder, in full connection to the Conference. In 1939, after the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church South had reunited, Reverend Blankenship, although already fully ordained, began his work toward his college degree, from Cumberland University in Lebanon, graduating in 1943 with a B.A. in English and History. He rode the bus from Dowelltown to Lebanon three times a week, taking classes all day long.

He received the Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University in 1948. Preaching fulltime as he pursued his education, Reverend Blankenship moved to Columbia in 1946. There he started two new churches, Saint Luke's and Riverside Methodist. In October 1948, he met the pretty young assistant home demonstration agent for Maury County, Miss June Wheeler, of Chattanooga, who had planned the 4-H Club banquet at the newly-built Riverside Methodist. Miss Wheeler was interested in a career and a master's degree in food science; Reverend Blankenship, who had just started two new churches and had bought a new gun and waders, was interested in church extension and evangelism, fishing and hunting. Neither was interested in marriage. The Lord, however, had other plans; they were married on October 2, 1949, enjoying sixty years of married life, with Mrs. Blankenship teaching and working with Reverend Blankenship in the church and in the community. Mrs. Blankenship passed away on September 15, 2009.

Reverend Blankenship's career reflects the history of the Methodist Church in middle Tennessee. He was present for the two important mergers: first in 1939, when the Methodist Episcopal Church South, the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Methodist Protestant Church united; second, in 1968, when the United Brethren joined with the Methodist Church to form the United Methodist Church. A dynamic preacher and old-fashioned pastor, Reverend Blankenship was mentored by a great Methodist evangelist, the late Harry Denman. Reverend Blankenship served in leadership roles in evangelism and missions throughout the Tennessee and the greater Southeastern Jurisdictional Conferences. He raised the first million dollar gifts for the Tennessee conference, 1968-71: for Martin College, Pulaski; Methodist camps and assembly grounds; and McKendree Manor. As district superintendent, he served the Bishop as vice-president of the Bishop's cabinet. A natural leader, "Brother Fred" built churches and congregations by hard work, good preaching, a focus on the Lord and not himself, and the ability to help people make connections. Always active in the community, he was a member of service organizations including the Lion's, Rotary, Civitan and Kiwanis Clubs; he was also a thirty-second degree Mason, was president of his Masonic class, and was affiliated with Jere Baxter Lodge. From 1932 to 1980, he served the following appointments: Savannah Circuit, Tullahoma Circuit, Collinwood Circuit, Smithville Circuit, Dowelltown Circuit, Hendersonville Circuit, Riverside, Belle Meade, Tulip Street, Lawrenceburg First, Shelbyville First, Columbia First, Conference Council Office Associate Director, Inglewood, and the Murfreesboro District Superintendent, from which he retired in 1980. After that time, he served as minister of visitation of Belle Meade and Forest Hills Methodist churches. He retired yet again and was called back, at age 83, to serve Pennington Bend and Glencliff United Methodist, the latter of which his brother Floyd had served years before. Preaching his last sermon in May 2007, at the age of 93, he stayed active and sharp as a tack until the last week of his life. Including all the congregations in almost 50 years of active service and 17 years in "retirement", Brother Fred served 58 churches in 17 appointments, taking over 4000 members into the Church. Large or small, he loved his congregations, counting it a privilege to serve. His relationship as the second pastor of Belle Meade United Methodist Church (1952-56) was especially interesting, as he was the pastor who worked closely with the late H.G. Hill as this new congregation in a developing part of Nashville had to chose whether to buy the Belle Meade Mansion and convert it into a church or purchase the current property off Davidson Road.
