2011, Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH, Obituary

Dayton Daily News (OH) - February 27, 2011

Gelvin-Rose, Rose Edna (Uhls) age 88, of Dayton, went home to be with the Lord sometime in the early morning hours of Monday, February 21, 2011 following an extended illness at home. She was born March 20, 1922 in Franklin KY, to the late John Abraham and Ruth Lee Uhls.

She was preceded in death by her husband Everette H. Rose, her husband Troy D.Gelvin, her brothers Roscoe Uhls, Edward Uhls, Walter Lee, Haskell Uhls, and Richard B. Uhls, her sisters Novice Kelly, Ruby Warren and Iva Steele. She is also preceded in death by her sons Jack Rose, Ronnie Rose, Robin Lautenburg, Randy Gelvin, Richie Gelvin, Reggie Gelvin, Toney Rose and son-in-law Larry Woolum.

She is survived by her sister Mary Ann Gorham, sons Phillip Rose, Herschel Rose, Roger (Veronica) Gelvin, and Rocky Rose, her daughters Sheila (Billy) Blankenship, Brenda (Ray) Hawley, Eleanor Tudy White-Sproat, Debbie Gelvin and daughter-in-law Maxine Rose. She was also the loving grandmother of 48, great-grandmother of 68, great-great-grandmother of 17 and aunt to innumerable nieces and nephews.

From one of those granddaughters,"...and she never ran out of love for any of them. Even those that were not biologically hers, she welcomed them as her own. I will never forget playing hair-do in her beauty shop, the pops she would insist we could drink, Sunday dinners where she would never sit down until everyone had seconds and the endless giving of anything and everything that she had to anyone who was in need. I am not biologically Grandma Rose's grand-daughter but will always be her Monica Rose. Long before I had ever met her, her name was with me. And her name will forever be with me until we meet again."

She ran away from home at age 14 so she could be a hairdresser. She always insisted on having her beauty shop in her home so she could be there with her kids. She dressed hair for 70 years, from before daylight till after dark. She never ran out of love for ANY of those who God put in her path - from the many ailing family members who needed constant care till their last days, to the men and women who came in to her home beauty shop. She had customers whose hair she fixed for years, and as they aged, she went to their homes, their nursing homes, their hospitals, and finally to their funeral homes to fulfill their wishes for the last time.

The family will be receiving friends at Parkview Church of the Nazarene at 4701 Far Hills Ave. in Dayton, for a memorial service to celebrate her life on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 10:30am. In an act of unselfish concern for all who succeed her in life, Rose donated her remains to Wright State University School of Medicine.
