Larry Anthony Blankenship, age 74, Deer River, died Dec. 24, 2011 of congestive heart failure in his home in Deer River surrounded by his loving family. Larry was born June 30, 1937 in Thomaston, Ga., to Mileston and Esther (Barnes) Blankenship.

He married June Storlie on Dec. 16, 1958 in Baltimore, Md. Larry retired from the USAF in 1975 as a staff sergeant after serving in Korea, Okinawa (Vietnam War), Norway, Thailand and various other locations for more than 20 years. Larry worked for Itasca County in the Road and Bridge Department where he retired after 23 years after knocking down a few mail boxes while snow plowing (oops). He was a Morse Township Supervisor for 32 years, a member of the Deer River VFW 2720 and a member of the Honor Guard. Larry was fortunate to travel the world during his military career and although born a southern boy he loved nothing more than the beauty of northern Minnesota and a nice quiet evening by the fire or sitting in the yard near the pines with his wife. As Frank Sinatra so eloquently sang, "I Did It My Way" and Larry most certainly did!

Larry is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife June of 53 years; son Ken (Penny); daughter Nanette (Brian) Morgan; and son Randy (Tammy); nine grand-children, Aaron, April, Sarah, Trevor, Andrew, Joshua, Wyatt, Carter and Hunter; four great-grandchildren and his sister, Pat (Virgil) Smith.

Visitation with his family will take place Friday, Dec. 30 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Carroll Funeral Home in Deer River. Immediately following the visitation a memorial lunch will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Vets Club in Deer River.
