2010, Louisa, Lawrence Co., KY,  Death
The Herald-Dispatch
, (Huntington, WV) - February 5, 2010

By David E. Malloy The Herald-Dispatch dmalloy@herald-dispatch.com LOUISA, Ky. –

A Lawrence County, Ky., native was among three soldiers killed in a targeted bombing in Pakistan earlier this week. Matthew Sluss-Tiller, a 1993 Lawrence County High School graduate, was among three American soldiers killed in a bomb blast Wednesday outside a school in Pakistan. Three students also were killed in the blast that apparently targeted the soldiers. "He was a wonderful kid," said Brenda Thornbury, an art teacher at the high school in Louisa. "He was one of my students. I heard about it last night. It's been difficult." "He loved God," she said. "He loved his family, and he loved his country.

When he was in high school, all he ever wanted to do was be in the military." Sluss-Tiller called her last year and used her as a reference for an overseas mission, she said. "He called me his school mom," Thornbury said. The military never called her to talk about her former student, she said. "I knew it was dangerous," she said. Sluss-Tiller was based out of Fort Bragg, N.C.

He is survived by his wife, Melissa, and a daughter, Hannah. His mother, Jane Blankenship , moved to North Carolina to be close to the family.
