Woman Dies Helping Cars Safely Past Rock Slide

Auxier -- A 22-year-old East Point woman was killed Sunday night while trying to do a good deed. The victim, Stacy Anette Blankenship, was standing in the southbound lane of U.S. 23, attempting to prevent motorists from running into a rock slide, when she was struck head-on by an elderly driver, authorities said. Blankenship was dead on arrival at nearby Highlands Regional Medical Center, said Sgt. Lloyd Powers of the Floyd County sheriff's office.

Blankenship and her husband, Will Blankenship, were northbound on U.S. 23 about 9:15 p.m. when they arrived at the rock slide, about 1,500 feet from the entrance of Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, authorities said. Such slides have been common along the two-lane road between Paintsville and Prestonsburg. The highway is being rebuilt about a mile away and is scheduled to reopen next year. This time, boulders blocked the northbound lane and debris was scattered across the southbound lane, Powers said. Powers said Blankenship and her husband stopped their car, put on orange vests, grabbed flashing orange lights and hand-held citizens band radios and began directing traffic around the rock slide. He said Blankenship was standing in the southbound lane while her husband was in the northbound lane. At 9:22 p.m., a southbound 1991 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by John Wesley Howard, 73, of Prestonsburg struck Stacy Blankenship, Powers said. "She went across the top of the car and came off the back right side," he said. Howard told authorities he did not see Blankenship until after he hit her, Powers said. No charges have been filed pending further investigation, Powers said.

1992, Covington, Kenton Co., KY, Obituary

The Kentucky Post, (Covington, KY) - February 15, 1992

Fred J. Halcomb, 83, Of Covington, SchooL Crossing Guard For 15 Years

For 15 years, Fred J. Halcomb guided young students walking to elementary schools in Covington safely across busy intersections. Mr. Halcomb was a school crossing guard and "he loved it very much," said his wife, Della S. Bell Halcomb. "The children seemed to like him a lot." Mr. Halcomb, of Covington, died at 12:35 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North. He was 83. Mr. Halcomb was born and reared in Somerset.

He worked for more than 20 years loading trucks for the St. Vincent DePaul Society in Cincinnati. He liked to fish and travel. The Halcombs took trips to Florida and the Tennessee mountains. But what he liked best was his job as a school crossing guard. Every school day, he would don his blue uniform, orange hat and take his red stop sign to an intersection. He worked for many years at 19th and Howell streets before moving to Willow Run and 12th streets.

Mr. Halcomb reluctantly gave up the job about three years ago when he began battling cancer, his wife said. Mrs. Halcomb said her husband tried to return to work a couple times but didn't have the strength. "He always said he was going back to work. He had his signs ready and everything." Other survivors include daughters, Shirley Holliday, Teddy Kay Williams, Judy Blankenship and Kostandina Meeise, all of Covington, and Betty Luster of Cincinnati; and sisters, Evelyn Campbell of Cincinnati and Beatrice Hurst of Amelia, Ohio.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright.
