Lucy Johnson Blankenship, former executive director of the local Red Cross, died Tuesday at her home on Waterworks Road, apparently of a heart attack. She was 82.

Mrs. Blankenship began working for the Red Cross in 1942, sterilizing needles and helping with clinics. Later, she was made executive director, and held that post for many years until she retired last year. As head of the Red Cross she organized bloodmobile drives, delivered emergency messages and handled the organization's records. "She meant an awful lot (to the community) . . . She just did a lot of things that a lot of people don't know," said Susan Vogt, who is executive secretary of the Danville-Boyle County United Way. "She was always there to help people." Also active in The Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Blankenship had taught Sunday school there.

She was a Boyle County native and the widow of Joseph J. Blankenship Jr.

Surviving are a son, William Blankenship of Daytona Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

 Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at The Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at Stith Funeral Home. Contributions are suggested to a favorite charity.

William B. Ryan, one of two Spanish-American War-era veterans living in Kentucky and the oldest resident of the Veterans Administration Medical Center on Leestown Road, died of pneumonia Monday at the medical center. He was 103. Ryan, who was born Oct. 21, 1881, in Scott County, Tenn., near the Kentucky border, was a bugler with the 8th U.S. Coast Artillery from July 1901 to July 1904.

He spent most of his time in the military at Fort Morgan, Ala., he had told Veterans Administration employees. "I was in on the end of it (the war)," he said in a 1981 Herald-Leader interview just before his 100th birthday. "I wasn't in no battles. I was a bugler. There was three of us to the company. I had two red stripes down my legs." Ryan, who was buried with military honors Thursday in Chitwood Cemetery in Scott County, Tenn., was one of 16 living Spanish-American War-era veterans in the country, James R. Fischl, services officer for the Veterans Administration regional office in Washington, D.C., said yesterday. The remaining 15 veterans range in age from 99 to 108, with Walter B. Pleate of Pennsylvania the oldest. Hickory E. Grace is the other Spanish-American War- era veteran living in Kentucky, Fischl said.

Ryan took up bowling at the age of 98 and was still participating in the sport after he reached the century mark. "The hospital gave him a bowling ball on his 100th birthday with his initials on it. He really valued that very much. He continued bowling for a long time," said Suzanne Harvey, supervisor of the nursing-home care unit at the medical center. "His main hobby was bowling." His average was about 100. ''He liked to kiss the girls," she added. "He would say, 'It's not every day you get the opportunity to kiss a man 100 years old.' " Ryan, the next to youngest of Jim and Emily Ryan's eight children, had been a farmer, miner and electrician, and at one time chiseled tombstones out of granite for a living.

He spent most of his life around Winfield, Tenn., but had lived in Harlan County and Whitley City. He worked for Stearns Lumber Co. at Stearns at one time, a daughter said. He was married three times. His first wife died and he divorced the other two, the daughter, Pearl Lovett of Whitley City, said. She said he was a musician throughout much of his life, and played the trombone, piano, guitar and violin. Ryan said in the 1981 interview that he could not attribute his longevity to anything in particular, but he said it might have had something to do with his dietary habits. "I didn't drink no whiskey much. I can't do without eating. I eat pretty hearty. If I didn't, I'd fall in a ditch," he said, adding that he especially liked buttermilk and onions.

In addition to Mrs. Lovett, Ryan is survived by two other daughters, Helen Walker of Cherry Hill, N.J., and Flossie Sue Blankenship of Winfield, Tenn.; four sons, Bill Ryan of Akron, Ohio, Ray Edward Ryan of Camden, Tenn., Arnold Ryan of Winchester, Va., and Leamon Ryan of San Diego, Calif.; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A fourth person has died of injuries suffered in a two-car head-on collision on Alligator Alley about 22 miles west of the Broward County toll plaza, Florida Highway Patrol officials said. Cecil C. Blankenship, 57, of Frankfort, Ky., died Sunday [09Jun1985] of numerous injuries. Blankenship 's sister-in-law, Patsy C. Osborne, 45, of Danville, Ky.; his son, Cecil C. Blankenship II, 26; and his son's girlfriend, Linda L. Black, 22, of Nicholasville, Ky., were killed in the crash early Saturday morning, officials said. A fifth passenger in the car, Peggy O. Bertram, 49, the wife of the elder Blankenship, was in stable condition at Humana Hospital Bennett.

Their car was struck by a vehicle driven by Carlos L. Ramos, 24, of Carol City, a Miami suburb, who was traveling east when he crossed into the westbound lane of Alligator Alley, a two-lane road across the Everglades between Florida's east and west coasts. Ramos was listed in critical condition at Pembroke Pines General Hospital. Another passenger in Ramos' car, Milton De Jesus, 29, also of Carol City, was treated for minor injuries and released. De Jesus' son, 3-year-old Milton De Jesus Jr., suffered a fractured skull. He was listed in stable condition at Humana Hospital Bennett.

Services Set For Father And Son

A joint funeral will be held Friday for a father and son killed in a two-car head-on collision in Florida over the weekend. Cecil Coleman Blankenship Sr., 57, of 1013 Entrada Drive, Frankfort, died Sunday in Plantation, Fla. His son, Cecil Coleman Blankenship II, 26, of 254 Biloxi Street, Nicholasville, died Saturday in Plantation.

The father is survived by his wife, Peggy Osborne Blankenship. The son is survived by his mother, Beatrice Woodside Blankenship.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Harrod Brothers Memorial Chapel in Frankfort. Visitation will begin at 7 p.m. today.

Barbourville Man Dies On His 100th Birthday

Lewis Evans, a resident of Valley Park Convalescent Center, died Monday on his 100th birthday. Evans, a career military man, was born May 6, 1885, in Bell County. He was looking forward to reaching the century mark, a daughter said yesterday. But Evans' health worsened over the weekend, and plans for a celebration that included cake and a new hearing aid for Evans had to be canceled, she said. Evans, who grew up on a farm, was an Army mess sergeant stationed in the States during World War I and World War II. He was in the Army Reserve for 52 years. He also had been a farmer and a miner. "He was a good cook. On Christmas, he'd make oyster dressing. . . . He made good pancakes from scratch. . . . Anything he cooked, he was good at it," said the daughter, Thelma Bryant of Lincoln Park, Mich. Evans lived his life "like he was in the Army," doing everything by a schedule, she said.

Evans' wife, Fannie Blankenship Evans, died 23 years ago.

In addition to Mrs. Bryant, he is survived by two other daughters, Mildred Ketch of Lincoln Park and Sylvia McCoy of Englewood, Ohio; two sisters; a half-brother; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great- great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Hopper Funeral Home.

D. W. Howard, the principal of Betsy Layne High School for 38 years, died yesterday at Mount Manor Nursing Home in Pikeville. He was 84. After he retired in 1972, the athletic center at the high school was named D. W. Howard Field House in his honor. Howard received both his associate and master's degrees from Eastern Kentucky University. He began his teaching at Beaver High School in the 1920s and later moved to Betsy Layne. After teaching at the high school for five years, he became principal of Betsy Layne in the early 1930s. He held that position until his retirement. A native of Lower Johns Creek in Pike County, Howard also had served on several educational committees.

He is survived by a son, Herman G. Howard of New Marshfield, Ohio; two sisters, Norma Mullins of Betsy Layne and Laura Blankenship of Cow Pen; two brothers, Kermit Howard of Dwale and Harvey Howard of Betsy Layne; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at D.W. Howard Field House, Betsy Layne.
