A Woman Hangs Herself; Mrs. Sion (Silas) Messer who lived just beyond the tollgate at Knob Lick Pike, hung herself Tuesday afternoon while her husband was in town and her children a girl of 13 and a boy of 11 were

at school. When her little nephew,

Porter Latlin went to the house no one responded to his knock and he went into a new room that is being added to the small house and there to his horror he found his Aunt swinging by a rope, which had been carefully tied to a joist. He started after Mr Messer and finding that he had returned imparted the awful news to him. On searching the house the husband took the rope from the woman’s neck and laid her on the bed and hurriedly sent for Dr. L. B. Cook but had death had already come and nothing could be done. The children came in from school while an I. J. reporter was there and the scene that followed would have touched a heart of stone. The daughter prayed fervently that her mother might be spared "Just one hour" while both of them hugged and kissed the prostrate form. Judge Dawson came with Dr. Cook and he decided that a coroner’s inquest was unnecessary at it was readily apparent that Mrs. Messer had come to her death by hanging herself.

The deceased was 52 years old and had been married twice She was the daughter of Henry Blankenship, of the Preachersville vicinity, and her first husband was Aaron Turpin by whom she has two children. She was married to Mr. Messer during Christmas of 1881. For some time her mind was unbalanced and at times she had told her husband more than once she intended to destroy herself. The noose of the cotton plow line which was used was not more than four feet from the ground and her determination to die was shown by the fact it was necessary to hold her feet up to carry out her purpose. The chair which she had jumped from was standing close by and the rope looked like as it had been greased in order to make it slide easier. No note or anything has been found to tell why she did the fearful deed. But not with standing she was in good spirits when her husband, it is naturally supposed that the condition of her mind caused her to take her life.
