Idaho Statesman
In Remembrance Michael B. Blankenship. He will be remembered as an outspoken
voice for improving the American justice system. Michael B. Blankenship, a police officer turned professor of criminal justice, believed
in the U.S. justice system but was not afraid to point out its flaws. Blankenship, 56, died on the Boise State campus Thursday after
collapsing while walking to his car, according to his son Ian’s posting on
Facebook. Blankenship died less than a month after undergoing
gastric bypass surgery. He’d recently joked to friends on Facebook that a slow
recovery had left him “so bored that I am watching baseball.” The surgery had
made him eager to celebrate his 56th birthday on April 3.
Blankenship was
remembered as an advocate for reforming a system that relied too heavily on
“incarceration rather than rehabilitation” of people guilty of “low-level
crimes,” recalled Monica Hopkins, executive director of the American Civil Liberties
Union of Idaho. Hopkins was a student at BSU during the time that Blankenship
was dean of the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs. But they did not
become acquainted until 2009, when Blankenship called
to congratulate her on a guest opinion she wrote for the Idaho Statesman, in
which she pointed out the “diminishing returns” on the millions Idaho invests
in corrections, probation and parole.
“He believed in the system, and that people had to pay for their
crimes. But that it had to be a punishment that fit the crime.”BSU
President Bob Kustra said Blankenship was appreciated by his students and colleagues for his
“passion for teaching” and by Treasure Valley residents “who were touched by
his outreach and advocacy.” “He will be missed as a vital member of our campus
community,” Kustra said.
Blankenship earned
a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice and a master’s in public
affairs from Western Carolina University. He got his doctorate in criminal
justice from Sam Houston State University. Blankenship was a
Boise State dean from June 2002 until December 2006, when he joined the
Department of Criminal Justice full time. He came to Boise State from East
Tennessee State University, where he served as chairman of the Department of
Criminal Justice and Criminology, associate dean of the College of Arts &
Sciences and director of the Teaching and Learning Center. His blog, “The
Justice Gambit,” provided commentary on criminal justice issues and he was
routinely quoted in the media as an expert on crime and social justice issues. An
avid motorcyclist, he also wrote a blog titled “Movin’
On.” During his time at BSU’s College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs, he
initiated new research centers focused on urban and regional planning, aging and
Idaho history and politics. He also helped launch graduate programs in urban
and regional planning, gerontology and anthropology.
Blankenship is
survived by his wife, Sheila, and son.

Her family moved five years later to San Angelo, Texas. She
graduated from San Angelo High School and was in the school choir. She loved
music and played the piano. She attended San Angelo College with a major in music.
She belonged to BEta Sigma Phi sorority. She told her
girlfriends she was working on her MRS degree. A young airman named Richard was

they had three wonderful girls. Being a military wife you have to be tough
because your husband is gone a lot. They should give the ladies a parade and
medals too! Retirement was a blessing for the family.
Peggy retired from the Idaho First National Bank. She had fond
memories of her banking experience. A new chapter in her life started when we
opened a new business called Peggy's TV. She and her husband managed this
electronic endeavor. Peggy was the face of the business and her husband was the
technical part. We had great employee's to help us. Closed the TV business for her husband to take a job with Sikorsky
Aircraft. Peggy didn't have to work and her husband was home every
night. She could travel with her husband out of town. Five major Mall's in 40
miles of each other. She was in heaven! It was a very happy time for her. At 65
her husband retired to return to Idaho. Peggy was very active in the Caldwell
Christian Church. She was one of the organist for many
