http://www.atlantaprogressivenews.com/interspire/news/2010/02/12/becky-blankenship-1939-2010-presente.html

Becky Blankenship, 1939-2010, Written By: Alice Gordon, 2-12-2010, alice@atlantaprogressivenews.com

Rebecca "Becky" Blankenship, a left-leaning activist for the arts, has died at the age of 70. Ms. Blankenship died on January 6, 2010 of a currently-unknown illness--likely pneumonia--which she acquired in London, according to friends.

She had stood on parade in the frigid English air on New Years day 2010. For several years she with others had represented her organization, The Red Hat Society, at the parade. She returned home to Atlanta immediately afterward. Her close friend, former Dekalb County Commissioner Jacquie Scott, met her at the airport. Blankenship appeared to be suffering from a severe cold. This soon appeared to be serious and after a trip to the emergency room with Scott, she was admitted to Piedmont Hospital. She died at 1pm the following day. Her death was unexpected.

Becky Blankenship lived alone after her children had grown, but had very close relationships with the community. "She was very vivacious and outgoing, she was a lot of fun. She saw humor in everything," Scott told Atlanta Progressive News. Among the numerous causes she supported, Blankenship was a long-time reader and financial supporter of Atlanta Progressive News.

Ms. Blankenship was a red head who dressed in vibrant colors and was very alive, State Rep. Stephanie Benfield told APN. Her impression was striking and her personality matched her clothing. She was also said to be a very warm friend and outgoing person who was fun to be around as well as a community activist. 171 people were listed as friends on Facebook.

Ms. Blankenship was a 30 year resident of South Dekalb County, and a graduate of Decatur High. She was concerned and active in local politics and community affairs, especially those affecting the economic growth of her area. She never moved from her house in South Dekalb even with changes in the neighborhood; she welcomed diversity.

Blankenship graduated from King College in 1961 with a degree in English, according to her Facebook page. She dedicated herself to improvement of life for the entire community.

According Benfield, Blankenship was always advocating for one candidate or another. She was active in the campaigns of Tom Scott, husband of Jacquie Scott, when he previously ran and served as Tax Commissioner of Dekalb County; Jacquie Scott's own campaign; former State Rep. Georgia Maddox; and Burrell Ellis, CEO of Dekalb County. Many people knew her from community rallies and events.

Blankenship was best known for her part in bringing the arts to South Dekalb. She was President of the Dekalb Council for the Arts. She talked about the connection between economic and arts development in the area and how necessary one was for the other.

Benfield described her as an "active fixture" in South Dekalb in the arts community from long before her Presidency. She was a volunteer for many years before becoming the President ten years ago. She was instrumental in development of the arts, attending every meeting of the Art Center. "She was very involved with the development Arabia Mountain and Wonderland Gardens and was supportive of the art community in general in Dekalb," Benfield said.

Becky Blankenship was also good to those around her, according to her friends. "She was a wonderful friend. I was in an automobile accident. I was laid up for three months and every three weeks she took me to get my nails done because she knew that would make me feel better. In those days that meant driving out to Alpharetta because that's where I went to get my nails done. She epitomized what a friend is. She would try to do things for people that would really make their day," Ms. Scott said.

Ms. Blankenship joined the Hotlanta Reds, a local chapter of the Red Hat Society, an organization for women aged 50 years and over, with the mission of enjoying life to the fullest. Though she originally joined the branch in Atlanta, later after the organization grew very large, she started the Devilish Divas of Dekalb. As the founder she was called the Queen Mother. She met the members regularly for lunch and her attendance at the parade in London had been a regular event, Scott said. She attended many events representing the organization.

In addition, she attended conferences for quilters both in the United States and Canada, Scott said. Blankenship was a widow who lived alone and was retired. She formerly had been an office worker at a retail outlet.

She is survived by her mother, June Blankenship of Decatur; a son, Bobby Pharr of Decatur; a daughter, Suzanne Pharr, of Gainesville; a sister, Jessica Arthur of Lawrenceville; two brothers, Peter Blankenship of Snellville and Johnny Blankenship of Maysville; two stepdaughters, Stephanie Young of Stockbridge and Ginny Powell of Tucker; and three step grandchildren, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper, which also ran an obituary.

2012, Lithonia, DeKalb Co., GA, Obituary

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, (GA) - April 20, 2012

Mrs. Nonagene Farrill Daniel, age 90, of Lithonia, Ga., passed away Sunday, April 15th in Elberton, [Elbert Co.] Ga. where she had been a resident of Magnolia Estates. A life-long native of Lithonia, she was the daughter of the late Carl Melvin Farrill, Sr. and Adeline Kelley Farrill.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, the late William Thomas Daniel, Sr.

Mrs. Daniel was a 1939 graduate of Lithonia High School where she was awarded a 4-H Scholarship to attend West Georgia College. Following a year at West Georgia, Mrs. Daniel entered Emory University School of Nursing in 1940. At Emory, Mrs. Daniel was one of the first nursing students to initiate the Bachelors of Nursing program in 1942 and was chosen for a Pediatric Nursing rotation at New York City's Bellevue Hospital. After graduation from Emory in 1943, Mrs. Daniel immediately joined the United States Navy Nurse Corps as a Lt. JG and was stationed at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Va. and the US Marine Corp. Training Center at Paris Island, SC., caring for Marines back from the Pacific. She would remember them as "just boys". After World War II, Mrs. Daniel served as a Public Health Nurse in Atlanta then returned to Emory in 1948 serving as a member of the faculty for the School of Nursing and as Clinical Director at Emory University Hospital until 1952. Twenty years later, a former Nursing School faculty colleague would remember her as "one of our best". Together with her husband, a 1954 graduate of the Emory School of Law, they were the first of three generations of Emory graduates. She was always honored to have been a part of the "Emory story". A dedicated Christian, Mrs. Daniel was a faithful member of the Lithonia First Baptist Church from childhood. For over four decades she provided prayerful devotion to her church and her faith, leading the Women's Missionary Union, teaching children in the annual Vacation Bible School, chairing various committees and teaching Sunday school classes for children, youth and adults. She considered the support of Christian missionaries a "calling" and together with her husband, built and maintained a special home in Lithonia for furloughed missionaries from throughout the world. A mentor to many young women and men, she was a "listening ear" and "encourager" to generations of young people providing prayerful guidance as they planned their educations, careers and families. Mrs. Daniel was active in the Lithonia community serving in many capacities in the Lithonia Women's Club, volunteering as a school nurse in the local schools, leading Cub Scouts and serving in various PTA capacities. She was a regular volunteer nurse at the Lithonia Public Health Center and opened the community's first "Clothes Bank" in the early 1960's for needy families. Although a dedicated nurse and educator, she considered her "greatest calling" to be that of ́"mother". The DeKalb Chapter of the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs even named her "Mother of the Year" in the 1970's. Mrs. Daniel described her life as one of "different seasons": Student, Nurse, Naval Officer, Teacher, Educator, Mentor, Friend, Grand mother, Great-Grand mother and with great distinction, Mother. With deep and abiding love for each other, she and her husband raised three sons in Lithonia, sharing with them the confidence of their faith in Christ, supporting and encouraging them in every endeavor. In the lives of all she touched, in every responsibility she accepted, with the deepest faith in God and His purpose for each individual, Gene Daniel made a difference.

Mrs. Daniel is survived by Mr. & Mrs. William Thomas Daniel, Jr. (Linda) of Savannah, Ga.; Mr. & Mrs. Michael Farrill Daniel (Cynthia) of Huntsville, Ala., and Dr. & Mrs. Mark Lassiter Daniel (Dena) of Elberton, Ga. Her grandchildren: Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Daniel Harlan (Scott) of Snellville, Ga., William Thomas Daniel, III, Robert Hampton Daniel (both of Savannah, Ga.), Catherine Jean Daniel, Alexander Farrill Daniel (both of Huntsville, Ala.), Lora Grace Daniel, Caroline Hope Daniel and Kelly Christine Daniel (all of Elberton, Ga.) and her great-granddaughter Ann Marie Harlan. Mrs. Daniel is also survived by her dear brother and sister-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Carl M. Farrill, Jr. (Eva) of Lithonia, Ga., her niece Mrs. Carla Farrill Miles (Mitchel) of Lithonia; nieces Ms. Melinda Cowan and Ms. Susan Cowan Klem of Conyers, Ga., Mrs. Jacquelyn Ann Blankenship of Louisiana and nephew Mr. & Mrs. Walter G. Blankenship sits on death row for the 1978 burglary, rape and murder of 78-year-old Sarah Mims Bowen in her Savannah apartment. The board had stayed Blankenship 's execution earlier this year to allow for DNA testing; the testing, while inconclusive, did not exclude Blankenship from being the possible assailant.

Pierce

2012, Blackshear, Pierce Co., GA, Funeral

The Florida Times-Union , Web Edition Articles (Jacksonville, FL) - March 14, 2012

Ryan Allen Blankenship; A Blackshear man who led police on a high-speed chase Monday down U.S. 1 in a stolen Mustang before taking his own life suffered from depression and wanted to take a last ride in a car he loved, his distraught mother said Wednesday. "My son was not a car thief. He was fighting depression,'' Wanda Scoville said during a telephone interview. "He just wanted to take his last ride in that car."

Ryan Allen Blankenship pointed a pistol at a salesman at Robbie Roberson Ford in Waycross and then drove a 2012 Mustang Boss 302 through the showroom's open double doors. He sped south into Folkston at more than 130 mph before the car ran out of gas about 5:40 p.m. Blankenship ran from the car and hid in a ditch beside a railroad track for a few minutes before shooting himself, investigators said.

Blankenship had just turned 21 Friday and had been in the Marines until he received a general discharge about a year ago after refusing to deploy to Afghanistan, she said. Her son idolized the Marines and had joined while still in Pierce County High School under a delayed enlistment program, Scoville said. But once he had gone through his training, Blankenship told his family "he didn't know if he could shoot and kill somebody," she said.

After his discharge, Blankenship said some of the Marines he knew had died in Afghanistan and that "hurt him because he wasn't with them,'' Scoville said. "He was fighting this. He was so down on himself,'' she said. Scoville said she and Blankenship 's two older sisters all tried to persuade him to get counseling, and at times he would agree then back out. Scoville said they wanted to take him out for his birthday Friday but he turned down their offer. Then Monday he took a 9mm pistol from the home of his sister and brother-in-law, with whom he was living, and rode his motorcycle to the Ford dealership, Scoville said. Charlton County Sheriff Dobie Conner said it was a tough day for all the officers involved especially when they saw how young he was. "When I first saw him, I would have sworn he wasn't more than 14 or 15 years old,'' Conner said. He said there was also nothing else the officers could have done, whom he praised for "not crowding him, not forcing him to do anything." As he has pondered how it could have turned out differently, Conner said he comes back to one chilling thought. "I've thought a whole lot about what might have happened if that car hadn't run out of gas. He could have had an awful wreck and killed a lot of other people,'' Conner said.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Pearson-Dial chapel, with burial to follow at Enon Cemetery.

Pickens County Progress (GA) - September 1, 2011

A shining light is dimmed Cheryl Blankinship dies By Dan Huth, Progress contributor A bright light that brought hope and help to Pickens' underprivileged was dimmed Sunday when Cheryl Blankinship died at Atlanta's Piedmont Hospital. Cheryl had steadfastly refused to give in to multiple health problems throughout her life, until she was no longer able to continue the fight and died peacefully in the 55th year of a life spent serving others. When the homeless had nowhere to turn, Cheryl's photographic memory spun through all the resources available in North Georgia, and she swung into action.

When a nearly blind widow faced the loss of heat in the midst of a cold spell, Cheryl knew just who to call -at home--during a weekend -to keep the lady safe and comfortable. It wasn't uncommon for Cheryl to ferry a suddenly homeless family to a motel where she paid for their room out of her own pocket -even though it often meant she might have to do without.

Cheryl was preceded in death and George G. Coester; as well as a brother, Joe. Her mother's people were Pickens pioneers, with the Bunch name still common in the Hinton/Ludville area, and a road named after them. Born in Marietta, she was a proud graduate of Auburn University. She recently satisfied a lifelong dream of living in Scotland when she moved to Edinburgh. "I can smell the sea and watch the swans. People are so friendly. And they take their dogs everywhere," she wrote to a friend. "Could it be any more perfect?" In Jasper, Cheryl founded the Community Resource Center, where she served as director. She designed a program that helped those without education to earn their GED diploma. She counseled her clients on interview skills, and taught them how to fill out a resume.' In 2009 she was recognized by the North Georgia Employer Committee for her "continued support and commitment to individuals with disabilities." When the U.S. Department of Commerce could not identify enough qualified Pickens Countians to hire as census-takers, Cheryl offered the Resource Center's facilities to help train and test them. As a result, many unemployed Pickens County citizens were hired to fill the lucrative positions. She had a heart for the downtrodden and worked tirelessly around the clock to help them. She saw the Catholic charity St. Vincent de Paul as ideally situated for this purpose, and contributed time, funds, even donated an automobile to help the needy. "Not only was Cheryl an active supporter and volunteer, but she helped us immeasurably in streamlining our processes so we could help more of the needy -and do it more efficiently," explained past President Jack Marcacci. "President Mike Martin and I are going to miss her terribly, and so will the community." A passionate animal-lover, Cheryl never saw an abandoned animal she wouldn't adopt or help. Among the organized charities where she worked were the Jasper Women's Shelter, the Homeless Shelter, Pickens Animal Rescue and Good Samaritan Health Center. CARES Executive Director Larry Starr remembers "Cheryl was one of the first to volunteer when we opened our doors." She was a fixture at the Community Thrift Store, according to Thrift Store founder Don Russell. "Cheryl was a living example of what's good about Pickens giving help where help is needed," he remarked. "We lost a big part of the heart of Pickens county when we lost Cheryl." Donations may be given to St. Vincent de Paul. Typical of her desire not to draw attention to herself, Cheryl Blankinship requested that there be no memorial service. But there will be hundreds of quiet, personal tributes burning in the hearts of those this bright light has touched.
