2011, Chico, Butte Co., CA, Obituary

Chico Enterprise-Record (Chico, CA) - March 6, 2011

Fred William White died on March 1, 2011, at Enloe Hospital, from a Hemorrhagic Stroke. He was 66 years old. Fred was born in Trenton, Michigan on February 6, 1945.

He moved to Richfield in 1947 and attended Richfield Elementary and Corning High School. After graduating, he worked for Clair Hill and Associates, doing surveying and was a pipeline and road construction inspector. He married his high school sweetheart in 1964 and they had 46 wonderful years together. Clair Hill transferred him to Lake Tahoe, where he coached Little League and Women's Softball. They had their 1st child, Michelle, in 1968 and they're second child, Mitchell, in 1972. They lived there for 8 years, moving back to Richfield in 1975. That same year he was hired by UPS as a package car driver, retiring 30 years later having made many lasting friendships. In the late 70's, he obtained his Contractor's License. He fixed up several homes, built a few and eventually built their family home in 1981. Fred was a very active man and his interests reflected as much. He loved his family and all their get-togethers, riding his bike, cooking, woodworking, fishing and hunting, playing cards, his big green tractor/play toy and gardening. He was a wanna-be computer whiz, the go-to-guy for failed DIY projects, the "whole" families Handyman, as well as several others in the neighborhood. Fred genuinely enjoyed life and so many of the things it offered. It's hard to say what he enjoyed the most. He built a beautiful cabin in McCloud, sharing more family moments than we can count. The pride and joy of his life was his one and only granddaughter, Mackenzie Dyke.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Scottie White as well as his sister-in-law, Stephanie (Clary) Blankenship.

He is survived by his wife, Dorian; daughter, Michelle (Todd Dyke); son, Mitchell; granddaughter, Mackenzie Dyke; brother, Jack (Charlene); sister, Jeri Marion (Ron); mother-in-law, Edna Clary; sister-in-laws, Berta Grootveld (Kenny), Marcia White and brother-in-law, Dennis Blankenship. Nieces and nephews, Mark Andersen, Blake Andersen, Brett White (Linda), Holly Eller (Jeff), Shawn White (Paula). Stacey Laughlin (Don), Troy Grootveld (Melissa), Cory Grootveld (Rene), Dori Krueger (Lance), Kelly Franz (Brian), Jason Hunter (Missie), Steve Blankenship (Lisa), Reanna Bettencourt (Rodney).

At Fred's request there will be no service.

2011, Fresno, Fresno Co., CA, Obituary

The Fresno Bee, (CA) - November 30, 2011

Deceased Name: Sarah Irene Jane VonRembow, August 29, 1929 - November 26, 2011.

Jane was born on August 29, 1929, to Earnest and Jesse Garner in Norman, Arkansas. She was the second of nine children. With sponsorship, she attended school of the Ozarks. After graduating, Jane and her younger sister Faye moved out to California where she attended college in Berkeley. In Berkeley, she worked in a restaurant/bar and bought her first fast Chevrolet. Her friends in the Highway Patrol were always there to time her speed.

When Jane met Andy in 1953, she was informed the Chevrolet and Highway Patrol had to go. They were married a week later. Over the next nine years, she had five children. Jane and Andy were married almost 51 years before he passed away on August 5, 2004. With five children, vacations were camping and boating trips. Over the years, Mom either had the station wagon and boat or camper and boat packed and ready to go by the time Dad was home. With the station wagon packed with kids and friends, towing the boat named "Big Daddy", passerby's would look and shake their head. Little did they know there was a lot of love and fun in those trips.

Jane was a wonderful, loving and hard working woman. Her husband and children were very important to her and always came first. There was nothing she wouldn't do for her children. Mom was always there to help paint, baby sit her grandchildren, watch animals and everything in between. Jane was involved with Junior Achievement for several years and worked with Congressman Charles "Chip" Pashayan as his secretary. In her 50's, Jane learned to play tennis and loved the game. Mom and Dad became a tough pair to beat on the court and were involved in a lot of Chevron's tennis tournaments.

One of Mom's favorite pass-times were Arts and Crafts. She would design and make beautiful Christmas wreaths, ornaments and decorated reindeer. Before Christmas each year, she would have many requests for her latest creations. Mom's other favorite pass- time was going to the coast and shopping with her daughters Andrea and Deborah; her daughters-in-law, Mischelle and Melissa. Jane taught her children to love, work hard, be honest and be creative. Special thanks to Angelicare, Eleanor, Royal Gardens, Adore, Jaime, Lisa and Thelma, who took special care of Mom and nurses with St. Agnes Hospice, Marilyn and Sue, and Dr. Ong.

She was preceded in death by her husband Andy Von Rembow; grandbaby twins, Jeremy and Michael; sister Ima Jean; brothers Leroy and Rudell; and her parents Earnest and Jesse.

She is survived by her five children, Andrea and her husband Tom Ewing; Mark, Deborah; Gary and his wife Melissa; Michael and his wife Mischelle; grandchildren, Matthew and his wife Shannon; Natalie and her husband Aaron Blankenship, Marissa, Nathan, Andrew, Tyler and Hailey; great grandchildren, Gavin and Mason; sisters, Faye and Millie; brothers, John, Jim and Jesse; "her furpanion Princess"; and many friends who dearly loved her. Mom always had a smile on her face and a lot of love in her heart. She will be deeply missed. We are all proud to be her children and she will always be the greatest Mom in the world.

A Graveside service will be held at Clovis Cemetery on Saturday, December 3, 2011, at 10:00 a.m.

+2011, Novato, Marin Co., CA, Obituary

Marin Independent Journal, July 1, 2011, (San Rafael, CA)

James "JC" Blankenship Of Novato, passed away peacefully with family by his side on June 15, 2011 at age 70. JC was born in San Rafael to Corda and James "Carl" Blankenship on December 2, 1940.

From an early age JC had a love of things that go fast and often talked about his hot rod "Model T" or '57 Chevy that he and his teenage friends would race around in. Most of the friends from these stories became lifelong friends that you could feel were ready for more fun whenever they were together. Vivian Louie who grew up around the corner from JC, decided she loved the guy with the fast cars (that also had a small reputation for trouble) and married him. JC and Vivian bought a house in Novato where they raised two children (Jimmy and Christy). JC had an incredible amount of strength, energy, and passion that anyone that knew him well enough could feel. In his career as a plumber, he worked from being a laborer to being the foreman overseeing the work on some of San Francisco's sky scrapers. While succeeding in his ambitious career, JC spent his spare time having adventures with family and friends. Snow skiing, water skiing, dirt biking, hunting, fishing, photography, music, JC was always doing something interesting as well as being a fun character to be around so he accumulated so many genuine close friends. During the more recent years he made close friends of the newer generation of neighbors that had replaced the last generation of neighbors/close friends who really rallied around him during some hard times. He also became a valued member of the Novato Elks Lodge where there was always good friends, good food, fun parties, and he was treated like family. Some of the newest buddies that JC had won over were his grandchildren Jake and Alex who thought of him almost like a comic book hero! JC loved fast things and one of his favorites lately was riding his Harley Davidson which is what he was doing before this latest adventure turned into an accident.

JC is survived by his daughter (Christy Vion), son (Jim), sister (Mary Lou Delk), and grandsons (Jake and Alex). There is a memorial service for JC at Stafford Lake Area 2 on Sunday, July 10th at 12:00PM, friends and family are welcome to share in his celebration of life.

CHP on the lookout for driver after fatal hit-and-run accident Tuesday night

A Nevada City woman died last night after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver in North San Juan. The woman, who has been identified as Frances Blankenship, 48, left the Brass Rail bar at about 8 p.m. Tuesday (13Feb2011) and was headed south in the northbound lane of Highway 49 on foot when she was struck by a vehicle traveling north, according to a California Highway Patrol report. The incident occurred south of the Highway 49 and School Street intersection.

The vehicle dragged the victim about 200 feet, according to the report. She died on impact, the report concluded. The driver then fled the scene. No one witnessed the collision and the woman was left in the northbound lane, according to the report.

A second driver in the northbound lane saw what he thought was a dead deer and slowed down, but he hit her with the right side of his tire, dragging her, another 20 to 30 feet, according to the report. Realizing the body was not that of a deer, the driver stopped and called 9-1-1.

The accident is still under investigation, according to the CHP. Officers are unclear what kind of vehicle hit the woman, but are looking for one with front end damage, possibly a pickup truck.

2011, Capitola, Santa Cruz Co., CA, Emergency Responder

Santa Cruz Sentinel (CA) - May 27, 2011

Woman dies after 100-foot cliff fall in Capitola

Despite the efforts of several emergency responders, including Capitola police and firefighters from Central Fire District, a woman who jumped off a cliff just west of Hooper Beach in Capitola Wednesday night died. Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, according to Sgt. Mark Gonzalez, two women, who are believed to be related, were traveling in a car on Cliff Drive when the passenger jumped out of the moving vehicle, climbed over a 3-foot wooden fence and leaped off the cliff. The 34-year-old woman from Soquel fell 100 feet to the rocky beach below along Cliff Drive in an apparent suicide, according to Gonzalez. "It is just a tragic event," Gonzalez said. "We don't suspect any foul play in the matter."

Two Capitola police officers, Leland Blankenship and Kelly Minium, made their way to the woman on the beach, climbing over rocks to get to her. At one point, as waves crashed around them, the officers were forced to shed their duty belts and hand them to a recruit who was on a ride-along in order to scale an 8-foot rock. A third officer, Kraig Evans, was stationed at the top of the cliff and used his flashlight to help the officers find the woman.

She was unconscious when they arrived, but breathing, Gonzalez said. While the two Capitola officers stabilized the woman, Central Fire coordinated a rescue effort from the roadside. Three firefighters rappelled the face of the cliff, where the woman was strapped onto a backboard and lifted back up to roadway about 10:20 p.m. "I'm really proud of all of them," Gonzalez said. "They went above and beyond what was expected of them to try and save the woman. It was a total team effort involving multiple agencies."

As soon as the woman was lifted back over the cliff's edge, it was determined she was no longer breathing and had no pulse. Emergency personnel immediately began CPR, and continued efforts to revive the woman as she was lifted into an ambulance. Efforts to resuscitate the woman continued on the way to the Dominican Hospital, but she was pronounced dead from her injuries when she arrived.

2012, Fillmore, Ventura Co., CA, Obituary

Ventura County Star (CA) - March 4, 2012

Joyce Ann Patterson Vossler left this world after a lengthy illness on March 1, 2012, at the age of 91, to go sit at the feet of her Savior. Her family and friends surrounded her with love, encouragement and warmth during her illness, giving her a strong resolve to stay with us as long as she could. Joyce was born Jan. 13, 1921, in Sitka, Kan., to James Preston "Pat" and Ida Patterson.

They moved west in 1927, settling in the Bardsdale community where she and her sister Velma attended the Bardsdale School. One year after settling in, she witnessed the St. Francis Dam disaster and they were stranded on the southern side of the Santa Clara River for many days. During her sophomore year at Fillmore High School in 1936, she started taking art lessons from Lawrence Hinckley, a well-known local artist, and it became one of her lifelong pleasures. She graduated high school in 1939 and attended Ventura Junior College for two years. It was during this time that Joyce and her future husband were introduced.

After a wartime romance and marriage, newlyweds W.L. "Dub" and Joyce Patterson Vossler moved to Long Beach for a short time, where she helped the WWII effort as a riveter for Douglas Aircraft. When Dub was inducted in 1943, she moved back to Fillmore. Sometime in the 1950s she entered a local bake contest, winning first prize for her banana nut cake with white mountain icing and the title of Mrs. Fillmore. This then led to entry at the Ventura County Fair, where she competed with other "Mrs." Contestants from other cities in the county, and was a blue ribbon winner again with that delicious cake.

A fulltime wife and mother for many years, Joyce eventually went to work for Dr. Donald Musgrave as his office nurse for 14 years. She helped Dub build their first house while raising three children. Joyce was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fillmore and taught Sunday School for many years. She often told the scriptures to her church children through colorful chalk drawings. She loved to camp in the Sierras with family and friends, and was known to be a pretty good fisherman, usually catching the first and longest fish. She most loved spending time at the Rincon Beach campsites with her grandchildren, picking up seashells, exploring the tide pools, or just listening to the trains go by. When her husband retired in 1979, they moved to Sheridan, Mont., where they built their retirement home. They spent an idyllic 23 years there, making lifelong friends. Joyce always insisted they "come home" to Fillmore for Christmas to be with family. They moved back to Fillmore for good in 2004. This past July 2011, marked 70 years of marriage to Dub, which was celebrated with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, W. L. "Dub" Vossler; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Jerry Crockett, and Nancy and Raymond Cervantez, all of Fillmore; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sherry Vossler of Lowell, Ore.; granddaughters, Jennifer Crockett of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Teresa Blankenship of Sonora, Calif.; grandsons, Kelly Brown of Ojai, and Casey (Anne) Brown of Tulare, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Rachel Chavez, Brittany, Taylor and Kelsie Brown, and Jillian and Brennan Brown; great-great-grandson, Devin Willeford; and many nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Preston and Ida Patterson; her sister, Velma Patterson Mayhew; grandson, Michael Vossler; great-grandson, Joshua Chavez; and great-great-granddaughter, Desiree Jordan Willeford.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6, at Bardsdale Cemetery.

2011, Newbury Park, Ventura Co., CA, Obituary

Ventura County Star (CA) - November 22, 2011

Virginia Blankenship was born on March 15, 1940, at the Coco Solo Naval Submarine Base in the Panama Canal Zone, where her father, Commander Thompson Black, and his wife, Katherine, were stationed. As a military child, Ginny moved to several states before her family settled down in Hollywood, Calif. After graduating from Immaculate Heart Catholic High School, she continued her education in nursing at the Queen of Angeles Hospital in Los Angeles.

In the fall of 1964, Ginny met the love of her life, Chuck Blankenship, and they were married on Jan. 23, 1965. After briefly residing in North Hollywood, during the summer of 1965, Chuck and Ginny moved to the Conejo Valley. They raised three beautiful daughters, Laura, Cindy and Stacy, in Thousand Oaks and then in Newbury Park.

In 1974, Ginny began her teaching career with the Conejo Valley Unified School District where she specialized in Special Education where she was known as Mrs. B. During these years, Ginny gained three sons-in-law, and was blessed with eight grandchildren. In 1998, after 24 years of loving service to her "kids," Ginny retired from Newbury Park High School to spend more time with her grandchildren and Chuck. Ginny was a very creative person and along with her best friend, Barbara, started a floral design business where they tirelessly worked to make certain that every wedding or party was perfect! For very good reason, Ginny was the "Queen Mum of Fun" as a member of the Conejo Classics Red Hat Society Chapter. Ginny was also active in the Thousand Oaks Women's Club and she faithfully served in the Helping Hands ministry at Saint Julie Billiart Catholic Church in Newbury Park. Ginny and Chuck loved to travel and after retiring, they traveled around the world. For up to eight weeks at a time, they cruised the South Pacific where her father served during World War II, they went to the Great Wall of China, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Europe, and to her birth place, by cruising through the Panama Canal. Chuck and Ginny never missed an opportunity to live life to its fullest.

On Easter Sunday 2004, Ginny was diagnosed with inoperative brain cancer. Ginny was a true fighter and survived the disease for over seven years. Even though her illness slowed her down, Ginny never missed an opportunity to show her love and affection for her family and countless friends.

On Nov. 17, 2011, Ginny lost her battle and joined her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Ginny was welcomed into Heaven not only by her savior Jesus Christ, but by both of her parents, her brother Tom, her granddaughter Cassidy, and many other relatives who have gone before her.

She will be lovingly missed by her husband Chuck, daughters Laura, Cindy and Stacy and their husbands Ed, Barry and Kevin, and seven grandchildren, Devon, Eric, Jason, Megan, Shane, Ryan and Katelyn.

The Celebration of Life Mass will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26, at 1 p.m., at Saint Julie Billiart Catholic Church.
