Clarence Robert "Hammerhead" Blalock, a resident of Eufaula, died Monday, July 12, 2010 at Westside Terrace. He was 67. Memorial services for Mr. Blalock will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2010 at Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Abbeville with Rev. Thomas "PeeWee" Gamble officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Mr. Blalock was born in Abbeville, AL to Charlie and Iona Blankenship Blalock on August 23, 1942.

He retired from Chattahoo-chee Veneer as an Assistant Plant Manager. Mr. Blalock telling fish tales and was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Liz Hartfield (Tim), Cottonwood; son and daughter-in-law, Tim Blalock (Susie), Slocomb; four grandchildren, Christopher, Iona, Dakota and Jacob; special friend, Della Exum, Eufaula and lifelong friend, Pug Cummings, Abbeville.

Nesmith, Vivian Brittain 84, of Oneonta, Alabama, passed away peacefully at her home on April 30, 2011. The daughter of Joseph C. and Jewel Kennedy Brittain, she was born on July 25, 1926, in Summit, Alabama.

She and Carl Dalton NeSmith, Sr. were married on June 12, 1948, and had celebrated 51 years of marriage at the time of his death in 1999. Vivian was a 1944 graduate of J. B. Pennington High School, Blountsville, and received her B. S. degree from the University of Alabama in 1950. As an active member of First Baptist Church in Oneonta for many years, she held various positions of leadership and service. Vivian taught Sunday School for 20-plus years at the Oneonta Nursing Home and served in numerous positions with the PTA in the Oneonta City School system throughout her children's school years. She was a member of the Oneonta Worthwhile Club for a number of years. An accomplished seamstress, quilter, and basket weaver, Vivian's greatest joy was spending time in her kitchen cooking and baking for her family and friends. She used this God-given talent to minster and bring joy and comfort to others, especially those in time of need.

Vivian was deeply devoted to her family and leaves a legacy of love, loyalty, and service to her three children: Susan NeSmith Baker and husband Wade of Birmingham; Carl Dalton NeSmith, Jr. and wife Jane Ann of Oneonta; and daughter Sallie NeSmith Gunter and husband Keith of Guntersville; and grandchildren: Taylor Jourdan Berry Gunter, Graham Scott Bice, Dr. Mary Brittain (Jay) Blankenship , Carl Dalton NeSmith, III, Benjamin Neal NeSmith, Seve Powers NeSmith Gunter, Robert Charles NeSmith, Madeline Ruth NeSmith, and Andrew Bottcher NeSmith; and nephew, Jimmy King.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Cornelius and brother, Joseph C. Brittain, Jr.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Oneonta, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Taylor Jourdan Berry Gunter, Graham Scott Bice, Nicholas Brittain Bice, Carl Dalton NeSmith, III, Benjamin Neal NeSmith, Seve Powers NeSmith Gunter, Robert Charles NeSmith, Andrew Bottcher NeSmith, and Dr. Jay Forman Blankenship. Mrs. Annie Ruth Blankenship, 80, of Lanett died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011 at her residence. Funeral services were scheduled Monday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Kenneth Wyatt officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett.

Mrs. Blankenship is survived by three children, Patsy (James) Edenfield of Ellabell, Ga., Pamela (Johnny) May of Lanett and Anita Dale (Benson) Craft of Patmos, Ga.; five grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren; one sister, Mavis Cotney of Lanett; several nieces and nephews; and her dog, Benji.

Born Sept. 10, 1931 in Meriwether County, Ga., Mrs. Blankenship enjoyed going out with her sister, Mavis, and her special friend, Lillian.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Blankenship. Mrs. Blankenship was a member of Lanett Church of the Nazarene.

Mrs. Blankenship is preceded in death by her husband, James " Boat" Blankenship and her father, Hubert Bruce McCain.

She is survived by her mother, Emma Jean McCain of Ashland; one daughter, Ashley Stephens and companion Antuan Wood of Ashland; two sisters, Debra Deason of Ashland and Diane Chapman of Murchison, Texas; one brother, Wayne McCain of Ashland; one grandson, James Cayden Fry and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Ezekiel died February 13, 2011 at Russell Medical Center. There will be a Masonic Graveside. He was a member of Masonic Lodge-Elder Americus. He served 32 years as Treasury of Unity Presbyterian Church. He worked for the city of Sylacauga as an electrician. He also worked for Kimberly-Clark for 23 years, as an electrician. Mr. Ezekiel was a cattle farmer. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, also a faithfull church member. He was Paw-Paw Lodis to everyone. He served in the U. S. Navy in WWII.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Ezekiel; son, Billy Ezekiel; parents, Homer and Rushie Ezekiel; brothers, Ernest and Robert, Buddy, A. V.; sister, Evelyn ( Pete) Blankenship.

He is survived by his daughters, Donna ( Randy) Helm of Weogufka, AL and Judy ( Randy) Woodard of Fayetteville, AL; sons, Bobby Ezekiel ( Ann) of Weogufka, AL and Tim Ezekiel ( Gail) of Weogufka, AK; 13 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; brother, Curtis Ezekiel of Sylacauga, AL; sister, Carolyn Pody of Piedmont, AL

William Henry Henderson William Henry (Willie) Henderson, a resident of Ariton, Alabama, formerly of the Mt. Pisgah community, near Echo, died early Friday morning, August 26, 2011, at his home. He was 104.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 29, 2011, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend T. P. Martin and a grandson, Keith Ammons officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Cemetery, near Echo.

Mr. Henderson was born in Bullock County, near Perote, son of the late James Henderson and Mary Elizabeth Clark Henderson. He lived in the Echo area all of his lifetime before moving to live with his daughter, near Ariton, in January 2011. The Echo community has lost its oldest resident.

Mr. Henderson retired as a Tree Cutter with McDaniel Sawmilling and was formerly employed by Barefield Sawmilling, both of Echo. He formerly managed Barefield Fish Ponds in Echo. In later years, Mr. Henderson worked on lawnmowers at his home. He was a member of the Loftin Baptist Church in Pike County.

Mr. Henderson was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Blankenship Henderson, a daughter, Sylvia Whitehead, a son, Edward Henderson, a grandson, LaDon Whitehead, a great-grandson, Travis Robidoux, a son-in-law, Charles Palmer, a sister and three brothers.

Surviving relatives include six daughters, Ruth Palmer, Newville; Imogene Selph and husband, James, Clarksville, TN; Betty Ammons and husband, Emmitt, Midland City; Judy Maas and husband, Alex, Clarksville, TN; Belita Hancock and husband, Billy, Ariton, AL; Bobbie Willoughby and husband, Jerry, Rocky Head Community; a daughter-in-law, Mildred Henderson, Level Plains, AL; a sister-in-law, Tommie Henderson, Ozark, AL; nineteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Gerald Blankenship, a resident of the Bertha Community of Dale County, died early Monday night, March 1, 2010 at his home. He was 77. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2010 in New Hope Baptist Church in the Bertha Community with Rev. Shane Traylor officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside.

Mr. Blankenship was a native and lifelong resident of the Bertha Community, son of the late James Grady Blankenship and Minnie Belle Barefield Blankenship. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Mr. Blankenship was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church & was a wonderful father and provider.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Lou Blankenship; 2 sisters, Melba Brannon and Gail Herring; 3 brothers, Dan Blankenship, Marvette Blankenship & Jack Blankenship.

Mrs. Dozier was preceded in death by husband Arthur G. (Ott) Dozier and her daughter Mary Arthur McQueen.

She is survived by three sons, J.C. (Mary) Dozier of Wetumpka, Robert (Alice) Dozier of Millbrook and Larry (Marilyn) Dozier of Wetumpka; one son in-law Harold McQueen Sr. of Wetumpka; 10 grandchildren, Harold McQueen Jr., Cynthia McQueen Mitchell, Rory McQueen, Carol McQueen Anderson, Pam Dozier Ingram, Todd Dozier, Robbie Dozier, Shannon Dozier Donaldson, Christopher Dozier, Michael Dozier, 16 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Mr. Blankenship was born and reared in Henry County, near the Bertha Community, son of the late Perry Webster Blankenship and Flossie Cook Blankenship. He lived in the Abbeville area all his life and was engaged in farming. Mr. Blankenship was of the Baptist faith.

James W. (Bill) Blankenship, a resident of County Road 69, Newville, (Bertha Community) died Saturday afternoon, October 23, 2010 at his home. He was 84. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, October 25, 2010, in the New Hope Baptist Church in the Bertha Community with the Reverend Shane Traylor and the Rev. W.M. Todd officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, followed in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Blankenship was a native of Henry County, son of the late James Grady Blankenship and Minnie Belle Barefield Blankenship. He lived most of his lifetime in the Bertha Community of Dale County. Mr. Blankenship served his country in the United States Army during World War II and later retired from the Alabama Army National Guard in Abbeville after twenty-six years service. He retired from the Dale County Commission as a mechanic in automotive and heavy equipment repair. In earlier years, Mr. Blankenship was employed with the Murphy-McGee Oil Company in Abbeville as a truck driver and also self-employed as a mechanic. He was a member of the New Hope Baptist  Church.

Mr. Blankenship was preceded in death by two sisters, Melba Brannon and Gail Herring and also four brothers, Dan Blankenship, Marvette Blankenship, Jack Blankenship and Gerald Blankenship.

James W. Blankenship, a resident of County Road 69, Newville, (Bertha Community) died Saturday afternoon, October 23, 2010 at his home. He was 84. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday, October 25, 2010, in the New Hope Baptist Church in the Bertha Community with Reverend Shane Tray-lor and Rev. W.M. Todd officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Blankenship was a native of Henry County, son of the late James Grady Blankenship and Minnie Belle Barefield Blankenship. He lived most of his lifetime in the Bertha Community of Dale County. Mr. Blankenship served his country in the United States Army during World War II and later retired from the Alabama Army National Guard in Abbe-ville after twenty-six years service. He retired from the Dale County Commission as a mechanic in automotive and heavy equipment repair. In earlier years, Mr. Blankenship was employed with the Murphy-McGee Oil Company in Abbeville as a truck driver and also self-employed as a mechanic. He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church.

Mr. Blankenship was preceded in death by two sisters, Melba Brannon and Gail Herring and also four brothers, Dan Blankenship, Marvette Blankenship, Jack Blankenship and Gerald Blankenship.

Myrtle Blankenship Brannon, a resident of County Road 7, Newville, AL, died early Saturday morning, April 28, 2012, at her home. She was 95. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 30, 2012, in the Old Center United Methodist Church Cemetery, near Newville, with Reverend Kenneth Preston officiating.

Mrs. Brannon was born and reared in the Bertha community of Dale County, daughter of the late James Grady Blankenship and Minnie Belle Barefield Blankenship. She lived in the Old Center community of Henry County most of her adult lifetime. Mrs. Brannon and her late husband, James Oliver Brannon, formerly owned and operated J. O. Brannon Grocery, near Newville.

She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Richard Davenport, two sisters, Melba Brannon and Gail Herring, five brothers, Dan Blankenship , Marvette Blankenship , Jack Blankenship, Gerald Blankenship and Bill Blankenship .

Elba Ray Morrison, a resident of Shorterville, died late Tuesday afternoon, March 6, 2012, at his home. He was 87.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, March 8, 2012, in the Shorterville Baptist Church with Reverend Ray S. Reiley and Reverend Mike Lee officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Morrison was a lifelong resident of Shorterville, son of the late Harvey Clement Morrison and Mary Fortson Morrison. He served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II and later retired from the Army National Guard in the Abbeville unit with rank of Staff Sergeant. Mr. Morrison was a member of the Shorterville Baptist Church. He was also retired as a truck driver from the Henry Farm Center in Abbeville.

Mr. Morrison was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Norton Morrison, grandsons, Clarence Blankenship and Blake Spivey and two sisters, Nettie Hutto and Bertha Wood.

Linda Sue York Elliott, a resident of Ashford, died Sunday night, October 9, 2011, in a Dothan hospital. She was 64. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 12, 2011, in Harper's Joy Assembly of God with Reverend Eddie Littlefield, Reverend Thomas Harrison and Reverend Randy Dean officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethlehem Baptist Cemetery, near Headland.

Ms. Elliott was born and reared near Columbia, daughter of the late Miles Bartow York and Vassie Ola Kelly York. She lived in Belle Glade, Florida before moving to Ashford where she lived most of her adult lifetime. Ms. Elliott was a graduate of Belle Glade High School. She was a caregiver for her parents for eight years and later employed as a caregiver for the elderly. In earlier years, Ms. Elliott was employed as a dispatcher in Ashford and Belle Glade.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Bernice Farmer, Thelma Poole, Jean Penuel and Mary Dell Love.

Surviving relatives include two sons, Walt Matthew Elliott and wife, Hope, Dothan; Bart Anthony Elliott and wife, Darene', Dothan; four grandchildren, Stephen Elliott, Dylan Blankenship , Kalyn Leno and Laken Elliott; two sisters, Janice Dean, Ashford; and Barbara Ann Milligan, Belle Glade, FL; a brother, Theo York, Headland; several nieces and nephews.

Samuel Thomas (Sam) Jones, a resident of Dothan, died Sunday night, August 14, 2011, in the emergency room of a Dothan hospital. He was 57.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 17, 2011, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Norman C. Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, between Headland and Dothan.

Mr. Jones was a native of Headland and lived in the Headland and Dothan area all of his lifetime. He was a 1972 graduate of Headland High School and received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Mathematics from Auburn University. Mr. Jones was currently employed at the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Headland and was an avid supporter of the Auburn Football Team.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin Dewey Jones and Dorothy Nell Granberry Jones.

Helen leaves to cherish her memories, one son, F. Richard Blankenship , III (Linda), two daughters, Sharon Blankenship Jones (Henry) and Carol Blankenship Phillips (Dewayne), one sister, Elizabeth Anne Dodds Friddle, eight grandchildren, Laura Turner (Ben), Jennifer Blankenship , Kathryn Blankenship , Rachael Blankenship , Jessica Jones, Robert Jones, Jeremy Phillips and Jason Phillips and three great grandchildren, Essie Turner, Benjamin Turner and Sarah Turner.

Helen was born in Memphis, Tennessee but spent most of her life in Birmingham, AL and lived briefly in Yazoo City, MS. She attended Ramsey High School and in 1950 married Fred Blankenship , Jr. Helen was a long time member of Bluff Park Methodist Church and a supporter of The American Kidney Foundation and The American Cancer Society. She was beloved and a devoted wife to her husband, mother and homemaker for her three children, their families.

Services will be held Monday December 27, 2010 at Ridout's Elmwood Chapel at 1:00pm, with burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

 She was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church and graduate of West End High School and the University of Alabama.

Services will be Friday, January 14th at 3:00 pm at Elmwood Chapel with Rev. L. Earl Tew officiating and visitation beginning at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

Elizabeth Schilleci Blankenship of Birmingham, formerly of Bessemer and Auburn, died on Wednesday, February 16. She was 91 years old.

Mrs. Blankenship was born in Bessemer, AL, graduated from Bessemer High School and attended Montevallo College. She was a longtime member of St. Aloysius Church and a devoted member of the choir. Mrs. Blankenship moved to Auburn in 1974, where she served as a housemother for Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity for many years and later worked at Anders Bookstore. While in Auburn, she was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. She loved Auburn University and cherished her time there. Her three greatest passions in life were her family, her church and Auburn University.

Mrs. Blankenship was preceded in death by her husband, Donald K. Blankenship.

She is survived by her daughter Donna Holland (John); daughter Kathryn Munro (Tom); and son Kenneth Blankenship (Donna); granddaughters Lisa Blumenfeld and Mandy Miller and grandsons Christopher Langlois, Donny Blankenship and Devin Blankenship; great granddaughters Emily, Meredith and Lindsay Blumenfeld and great grandson Joshua Miller.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 19, 10:00 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church, 751 Academy Dr, Bessemer. Burial will follow at Cedar Hills Cemetery in Bessemer.

William Lawrence "Larry" Blankenship, Jr., Passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2012. He was born on October 2, 1946 in Birmingham, AL.

Larry grew up in Tarrant, AL and graduated from Tarrant High School. He worked as an insulation estimator in Birmingham and continued his career when he moved with his family to Louisiana in 1980. Larry retired in 2012 and enjoyed cooking, fishing, playing the guitar, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Brenda Southerland Blankenship; his three daughters, Lisa Graham (Terry) of Culpeper, VA, Stacey Blankenship of Lake Charles, LA and Wendy Clayton and fiance A. J. Decker of Lake Charles, LA; his six grandchildren, Brandon Graham, Hannah Nocilla, Nickolas Nocilla, Alyssa Graham, Ryan Graham and Marlie Clayton; and sister, Gail Kelley (Jay) of Pinson, AL.

Mrs. Carter died August 2, 2011 at South Haven Nursing Home. Mrs. Carter grew up in Parkdale, AL, in a family of five girls and one boy. She attended school in Coosa County and Talladega County, graduating from Mignon High School, now BB Comer. She continued her education by obtaining a diploma from Reynolds Business College.

She and her late husband, Mr. Cecil Carter, are the Parents of one son: William C. (Bill) Carter and wife Carolyn C. Daughter in Love) of Birmingham, who gave them 6 grandchildren; Jim Clark of Huntsville, Christa Burson of Alaska, Ansley Carter of Alaska, Karen Blankenship of Birmingham, Sharon Blair of Birmingham, Natalie Wren of Pensacola, FL, 10 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Carter gave her heart to the Lord when she was 9 years old and joined Parkdale Methodist Church. She became a member of First Baptist Church in 1945 and was active in all areas of church life. She taught Sunday School for over 60 years. She was a bereavement ministry leader and was honored by the church as Senior Adult of the Year in 2006. Aside from being a homemaker, she worked as a quality control supervisor for 11 years at Sylacauga Garment factory. She is 94 years old and resides in Birmingham. Mrs. Carters prayer was that "she had preached her funeral service by the way she lived, loved and served her Lord."

Robert Reece "Bob" Courington of Pinson, AL, 67, passed away at his home Friday, November 4, 2011. He was born on July 10, 1944. Mr. Courington served in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1971. Mr. Courington worked for 38 years for General Motors and retired in 1998.

He is survived by his loving wife, Rhonda, and daughters, Jenny Dupree (David), Stacey Courington, and Laura Hunton. Grandchildren, Adam, Autumn, Ashley, and Savannah Dupree, Makayla, and Chassidy Hunton. His sister, Janie Blankenship (Doug). His dog, Tippi.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Curtis Blankenship (the father of her children) and John Nolan Sweatt of Pell City, AL., where she lived most of her life.

She is survived by her son, Carl Blankenship (Pat); daughters, Patricia Battle (Felton) and Rhonda Hobbs (Butch); sisters, Margie Bowen and Margaret Blankenship (Sonny); brother, Davis Gardner (Ella Ruth); grandchildren, Jim Blankenship (Sheryl), Emily Hobbs Nelson (Brian), and Josh Hobbs (Jan); and sisters-in-law, Bett Graham, Elzie Welch, Syble Taylor, Evelyn Blankenship and Bonnie Blankenship ; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends whom she loved very much.

Ruby was a member of The First Baptist Church of Trussville where she was active in Sunday School, Senior Adult Activities and Worship. She was formerly a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Pell City for a number of years, living in the Chula Vista Community. Ruby loved to grow all kinds of beautiful flowers, singing in the senior choir, reading and enjoyed wearing bright colored clothes.

Funeral services will be held at Ridout's Trussville Chapel on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 1:30 PM. Burial will follow at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Pell City.

She worked in the Moulton Elementary School lunchroom for many years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Wallace; daughter, Vicki Blankenship; son-in-law, Ken Jinks; and daughter-in-law, Joyce Ann Wallace.

He was retired from Fruehauf and retired after 20 years from the U.S. Air Force as an E-7 Master Sergeant serving in Korea, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries. He served on Air Force One during the Richard Nixon administration. He was a member of Owens Chapel Baptist Church.

His sister, Audrey Blankenship Smith, preceded him in death.

Mr. Blankenship died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born July 16, 1931, in Morgan County to James Chester Blankenship and Cecil Wright Blankenship. He was retired from Local No. 520 Union Plumbers, Pipefitters and Welders in Pennsylvania. He was the State of Alabama Chaplain and Chaplain for the DAV Chapter 11 in Decatur and a member of the American Legion in Decatur. Mr. Blankenship worked and helped people get VA benefits for 50 years. He was a member of Serenity Baptist Church and loved to play the guitar. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in the Korean War. Mr. Blankenship was a member of the Somerville Masonic Lodge and worked for Enterprise Rental Car Company and a member of the Cahaba Shrine in Huntsville. He was a tribal member of the North East Alabama Cherokee Tribe.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Blankenship; one son, Rickey Leon Blankenship (Kathy) of Lawrence County; three daughters, Kim Saylor of Georgia, Barbara Ellen Snyder (Robert) of Middletown, Pa., and Lorie Reichel (David) of Harrisburg, Pa.; one brother, Eddie Arnold Blankenship of Huntsburb, Ohio; two sisters, Rebecca Bosworth of Painesville, Ohio, Shelia Cunningham of Madison, Ohio; 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

John Morgan Blankenship Jr., 79, of Madison passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2011. Mr. Blankenship was born May 3, 1932, in War, W.Va., and grew up in West Virginia and Texas.

He joined the Army in 1950 and served in a number of capacities, including as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division, before retiring with 22 years of honorable service. During his military career, he served throughout the United States and overseas in Japan, Germany, and for two tours in Vietnam. Following his retirement from the Army, he worked at Dunlop Tire Company for 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mary Sue Blankenship; parents, John Sr. and Cora Blankenship; sister, Eula Branhan; stepbrothers, Cova Gross and Wayne Blankenship ; and stepsisters, Hazel Stumbo, Audrey Scaife and Goldie Jennings.

Funeral services for Annie Lee Blankenship were Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at Pinkard Funeral Home in Haleyville with Jeff Boyles and Hugh Cavender officiating. Burial was in Winston Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Blankenship died Sunday, May 8, at Brookwood Medical Center [Birmingham, AL]. She was born in Moulton and had lived in Haleyville and Bear Creek for the past 60 years. Mrs. Blankenship was a member of Waldrop Freewill Baptist Church in Haleyville. She and her herband were the original owners of H. M. H. Supply.

She was preceded in death by her parents Will A. and Leila Gaston Martin; and her husband, Wilbur Blankenship.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Blankenship and Sheila Casey (Tom), both of Bear Creek; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Iona Mae Reed Bird, 75, of Gauley Bridge, died Jan. 1, 2010, at Montgomery General Extended Care Unit.  Born March 3, 1934, in Putnam County, she was the daughter of the late George and Hazel Davis Reed. She also was preceded in death by her sons, Steven Keith, on Dec. 30, 2009, Paul Lee and Michael David. Mrs. Bird was a homemaker.

Surviving: her husband, Junior Lee Bird of Gauley Bridge; son, Mark Nathan Bird of Orgas; brother, Paul Reed of Sandston, Va.; 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A joint funeral service with her son was held Jan. 4 at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Ministers Billy E. Morris, Lee Holliday, and Charles Blankenship officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Mrs. Blankenship “Granny”, who died Monday, March 15, 2010, at Decatur Health and Rehab, was born November 13, 1917, in Cullman County to James and Nellie Rhodes. She was a member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church of Decatur. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She and her late husband, R. J. “Happy” Blankenship owned and operated several businesses in Decatur over the years, including the Happy Way Cafe and the All States Court.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronen Julius Blankenship; her parents; and four brothers, Clarence, Elvie, Lester and Euel Rhodes.

She is survived by five sons, Dale (Carolyn) of La Grange, Ga., Don (Margaret) of Durant, Okla., Wiley (Marteen) of Decatur, Joe (Lura) of McDonough, Ga., and Paul (Charlene) Blankenship of Hollywood; three daughters, Shirley Rose, Nell Roberts (Charles) and Wanda Cagle (Bruce), all of Decatur; 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-greatgrandchild. Mrs. Blankenship, who died Tuesday, February 8, 2011, at her residence, was born June 16, 1931, in Morgan County to Colmon Dewey Holloway and Margaret Neva Roan Holloway.

She was a retired Logistician from the U.S. Army Missile Command, Redstone Arsenal. She was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church in Decatur. Mrs. Blankenship was a member of the Morgan County Genealogical Society, Joe Wheeler Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Stephens Chapter of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Earl Alsbrooks; husband, Edward Clinton Sharp; husband, William Albert Burns; her parents; one sister, Martha Ann Holloway Blankenship; and two brothers-in-law, Max Blankenship and Bill Curry.

Harry S. Johnston, 89, of Decatur, died Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 30, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home. Burial will be 2:00 P.M., Monday, April 30, in Camp Butler National Cemetery, Riverton, IL, with military honors.

Mr. Johnston was born January 19, 1923, in Minneapolis, MN, the son of Harry A. and Marion (Simmons) Johnston. He married Betty J. Blankenship April 6, 1944, in Barnesville, MN. Mr. Johnston served in the US Army during WW II in the South Pacific and Occupied Japan. Mr. Johnston worked as a corporate cashier at ADM for 40 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Decatur Chordsmen, his quartet "4-Crying Out Loud," the Minneapolis Men's Apollo Club, Decatur Earlybird Kiwanis Club, where he was past Lieutenant Governor, and Christ United Methodist Church. Mr. Johnston played Santa Clause for many years, sang in the church choir, and was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

He is survived by his wife Betty of Decatur; son Dr. Kevin Johnston of Decatur; daughter Karen (Bill) Prescher of Chillicothe, IL; brother Robert Johnston of Minneapolis, MN, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Lois Wallace.

Mrs. Southern, who passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011, at Decatur General Hospital, was born October 29, 1926, to Joseph William "Billy" Maze and Mamie Lois Reeves Maze. Mrs. Southern owned and operated Mr. Catfish Restaurant in Hartselle from 1976 until 1993.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James P. Southern and two sisters, Evelyn Blankenship and Wilma Cheatham.

Survivors include her son, Bill Southern and his wife, Carol; two granddaughters, Jenny Patterson and her husband, Patrick, Beth Carter and her husband, Jason; four great-grandchildren, Kyle and Olivia Patterson, Sidney and Alex Carter. She is also survived by three brothers, William "Buddy" Maze (Sally), Leo Maze (Yvonne) and Jimmy Maze (Barbara); and two sisters, Betty McCarter and Bobbie Stinson (Jimmy). In addition, Mrs. Southern, is survived by a host of nieces and nephews. She was a member of Gum Springs Baptist Church and attended the Mary Martha Sunday School class.

Duane Leon "Steve" Nelson died Sunday, July 3, 2011, at his residence in Hartselle. He was born in Ohio to Robert Leon and Blanche Presley Nelson on April 4, 1944.

He lived most of his life in Cole Springs and graduated from Falkville High School. Steve owned and operated Nelson Construction and had previously owned and operated Nelson Iron and Metal and was a Partner at N&W Metals. A loving husband, father and friend he enjoyed helping others and was always thoughtful and kind to everyone. He loved working and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife and soulmate, Melba Veal Nelson; two loving daughters, Connie Puckett (Troy) of Falkville and Kelly Holmes of Eva; one stepson, Steve Mote of Huntsville; one stepdaughter, Cynthia Blankenship of Somerville; two special brothers, Bill R. Nelson (Donna) of Somerville, John Nelson (Martha) of Falkville and special uncle, Ralph Nelson, whom Steve considered a third brother; five grandchildren, Blake, Jarred, Hannah, Tyler and Katie; three stepgrandchildren, Brianna, Madelyn and Ella; and one great-grandchild, Colton Cameron.

Mr. Boyles, who died Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at Parkway Medical Center, was born July 10, 1933, in Lawrence County to Luther and Chelsey Blankenship Boyles. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran. He retired as a maintenance worker from the Center for the Developmentally Disabled of North Central Alabama. He was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Boyles was preceded in death by three brothers, Hershel Boyles, Luther Junior Boyles and Lonnie "Sam" Boyles; and three sisters, Bernice Roberts, Mattie Djedzina and Mable Pierce.

Carolyn was a member of Ashville Road Church of Christ. She was a graduate of Shades Valley High School. She worked at Vulcan Materials Company for over 24 years. She began her career as the Secretary to the manager of Market Research and advanced to being a Market Research Analyst. She worked on many of the Acquisitions by Vulcan Materials including The Saudi Arabian project and the Mexico Project. She was a caring, loving wife, and mother and was an inspiration to her friends and family.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Braden; son, Scott Watkins (Tammy); daughters, Lori Goehring and Paula Blankenship. She is also survived by her brother, R. B. Bob Myrick (Barbara); grandsons, Heathe and Matthew Watkins; granddaughters, Lindsay and Ashley Blankenship, Alexandra and Alayna Goehring; and countless others who valued her wisdom, counseling, and guidance.

Services will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 12:00pm at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East. Rev. Drew Kizer will be officiating.

Larry Michael Leffew Sr., 62, formerly of Bradshaw and Hanover, W.Va., died December 22, 2010 of a short illness in Alabaster, Ala. Born February 2, 1948 in Welch, W.Va. to Taylor and Lillian Adkins Leffew, he grew up in Bradshaw with four sisters and assorted dogs. Michael worked as a coal miner for more than forty years in West Virginia and Alabama, and he was a master electrician.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Taylor and Lillian Leffew.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Deyon Blankenship Leffew of Montevallo, Ala.; daughter, Mylinda Leffew, of Man, W.Va.; son, Larry Michael Leffew Jr. of Alabaster, Ala.; and five grandchildren, McKahla Deyon West, Lilly Desiree Leffew West, Bailee Renee Leffew, Cody Clendenon, and Zachary James Holcomb; four sisters, Linda Leffew Hammond of Chatsworth, Ga., Kathy Leffew McGuire of Mt. Mr. Blankenship passed away on Friday, March 4, 2011 at his residence.  He was born on September 5, 1942 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama to Henry Jackson Blankenship and Bertha Solley Blankenship.

He graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology and a minor in English.  He served in the Army Reserve for six years and then the Air Force Reserve for five years.  He worked at the Alabama Department of Transportation as the E.E.O. Coordinator and retired twice with 35+ years of service.  He was a member of the Elks Lodge #1878 and had served on the Scholarship Committee, Hoop Shoot Committee and The Dictionary Project Committee. He loved and enjoyed life very much.  He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, and was an avid Auburn football fan.  He loved his family very much, especially his cousins.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary Funderburk Blankenship of Alexander City; daughter, Cynthia "Cindy" Yvonne Blankenship of Alexander City; son, Devlon Lewis Blankenship (Suzanne Teel) of Childersburg; grandson, John Christian Blankenship of Alexander City; brother, Jack Ed Blankenship (Bobbie) of Alexander City; nieces, Kristin Richardson and Karla Hines (Chris); and several cousins and many friends.

Florence Beavers Sides, 83, a longtime resident of Carbon Hill, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at 12:25 p.m. at the Walker Baptist Medical Center. She was born on Oct. 6, 1928, in Florence and grew up in the Prospect area and attended Nauvoo, Sides and Prospect schools. Her parents were the late David and Pernie Keeton Beavers.

Florence married Vernil Sides in January 1946 and was happily married to him for almost 66 years. She enjoyed singing, cooking and making a joyful, cozy home for her family. She was well-known in the community for her generosity. Florence served graciously in her role as pastor's wife and held various offices in the church for 40 years before her husband retired from ministry in the Church of God of Prophecy. Congregations in Carbon Hill, Leonard's Chapel, Snowtown, Cedrum, Jasper, Ensley, Collinsville, Alexander City, Hamilton, and Decatur were blessed by their ministry throughout the years.

Florence is survived by her husband, Vernil of Carbon Hill; her daughter, Phyllis (Sherwood) Cooper of Madison Heights, Va.; her daughter, Carolyn (Roy) Pierce of Jacksonville; and her son Harold (Carole) Sides of Columbus, Ga. She is also survived by five grandsons, Zane (Sabrena) Cooper, Jason (Mandy) Blankenship, Rustin (Courtney) Sides, Steven Blankenship, and Brock (Chelsea) Sides, and six great-grandchildren.

Florence was preceded in death by her firstborn son, Gary Hershel Sides, who died as a toddler in 1948. She is also preceded in death by her siblings, Cecil (Ruth) Beavers, Lois (Ed) Beavers Jones and Bruce (Sue) Beavers.

She is further survived by beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Florence's family will remember her laughter, her fun spirit, her strength in hard times, and her unfailing love for her husband, children and grandchildren. Her legacy will live on through her family and many friends.

A memorial service celebrating the blessed life and heavenly home-going of Florence will be held on Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Church of God of Prophecy in Carbon Hill, officiated by the Rev. John Billy Butler of Carbon Hill and the Rev. Gary Vernon of Lynchburg, Va. Burial will be at Smith Chapel Cemetery immediately following the service.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m today, Feb. 2, 2012, at Collins-Burke Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Townley. Bro. Jay Trayal will officiate.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Juanita Hawkins Seybert.

She is survived by her step-mother, Margaret Dunn; father, Jerry Glenn Dunn; step-father, Bobby Seybert; daughter, Kara Ashley Blankenship ; sisters, Tonya England, Holly Seybert, Dana Seybert and Candace Pascua (Norman Pascua); and brother, Robert "Boo" Seybert.

Karri requested that all family and friends dress casual.
